  1. hi all, im very new to ripping... and i use a program called VirtualDub MOD as a capture device for my Wintv capture card....wintv program dont work for my pc for some reason...and i use xvid cuz vdubmod for some reason wont let me choose divx.....well here is wat i know, i just want some opinions and suggestions for making better rips

i capture at video=XviD, audio=PCM 44.100 KHz, 16 Bit Stereo, 172kb/sec...note that vdubmod for some reason wont let me use lamemp3 for audio...i capture at 352x240

for a 3min video clip, the size is around 60mb...then i use Tmpgenc with a kvcd template at 352x240 audio is 128, and the vid is close to 20mb-30mb....just wanting to know if anyone can help me out that uses VirtualDub MOD to capture and knows the settings real good for the XviD codec

You capture to mpeg 4 (XviD) so to later encode to xVCD?
Don't expect good picture results that way...

The best root is to use virtualdub / virtualvcr with the Huffyuv freeware codec. Then frameserve and encode to xVCD. That shall give you better results.

Prepare that way to the fact that the filesize of your captures will be huge compare mpeg 4

If you are going to convert to vcd capture to lossless huffyuv or mjpeg instead of lossy xvid. Bigger capture files but you will get better quality when you are converting to vcd.

  4. yeap go lossless !!!! but you need the space make sure to create a NTFS partion if the video is gona be more than 4 gigs!!!!!!

    What kind of errors?

When I refer to virtualdub, I refer to all variations! Myself use a lot virtualdub mpeg2 and sometimes I use the original Vdub. Others use virtualdub MOD or synch or whatever.

You could try Virtual VCR as an alternative capturing program, maybe it works better with your capture card.

the lines are because your source is interlaced...divx and xvid is a computer
vide file and needs to be progressive. Translation => deinterlace your capture before encoding it to divx.

On the fly de-interlacing? Not a good solution either! The correct de-interlacing needs offline encoding.

The other only alternative is to grabb only one field per second. But that limits you to 352 x 288/240, which is not a good idea to capture any source anyway!
(in theory you can also capture at 720 / 704 x 288/240, but this is even more useless)

What you are doing is not smart. Not good quality and not efficient either.

If you want to make divx or xvid. Capture to some no loss AVI. Then compress to DIVX (divx is better than xvid). To make divx or xvid, you need to deinterlace the video before. You add the deinterlace filter in vdub, then compress it.

You could skip a step and do all this on the fly (deinterlace & cap to divx right away) . If it works for you..cool, if not, use the first method.

To make MPEG2... just use the software that came with your WinTV and capture to MPEG2 right away. This will give you much nicer DVD's. YOu have a good quality hardware MPEG2 encoder on that card. Use it. Vdub does not.

If you want to make an MPEG2, and like to do a lot of extra work, capture in vdub to huffyuv. This will be like 50-100GB large capture. Then encode it to MPEG2 using tmpeg. This is at least 3x ( more like 4 or 5 times the time) the work as capturing to MPEG2 right away. I don't know if you would get a better result with a WinTV card but with an AIW 9600, there is no point (if you don't intend to restore the video).
