  1. Does anyone have any knowledge of any new technologies that will enable divx files to play on stand alone DVD players?

I’ve heard that someone was able to copy “something” to the divx cd to enable it to play on a stand alone dvd player. If this is true, I would sure be interested in learning how to do this.

  2. Last I heard, it was currently IMPOSSIBLE to get a standalone DVD player to play a DivX file.

  3. Is this something called miniDVD? or simply MPEG4? I recently tried some MPEG4 vcd on my Sampo DVD player, it does not work, the machine was stuck. I have to turn the machine off and back on, and try rejecting immediately before the disk was loaded. I have read a page posting some patched firmwares for Shinco that would allow you to play miniDVD. If this is the case, why can't people patch the firmware to enable it to play Divx (if Divx is not miniDVD)as well?

  4. No miniDVD and DivX are 2 totally different items

miniDVD = DVD format material burned to CDR/RW, mpeg2/mpeg1 compressed video.

DivX = mpeg4 compressed video currently ONLY playable on PC, no standalones.

A firmware can not be patched because the decoders in standalones are not written with the mpeg4 codec. Therefore they would not be able to read the mpeg4 compressed video. You would need a whole new decoder, not simply just patching firmware. But do not fret, I hear good ol' M$ has something in the works to cure all of that.
