I have this drive: Lite-On LTC-48161H Combo
It rips DVD's to my HD at about 3500 KB/s. Is this slow? Should I be getting better speeds?
TIA.

sheeit, I figured it was slow. I wonder if there is a firmware out there that will remove the rip lock? I'll start hunting.
-
More than likely yes, but be extremely careful of "hacked" firmware. You can ruin your drive if you mess something up. If it's a new drive and you still have a warranty, I'd say go for it under any condition since you can always exchange the drive if the firmwire fries it.
-
I would be careful. Using a hacked firmware can void the warranty.
-
Most retailers will do an exchange and only open the box to make sure all the contents are there. I've never had a retailer plug the drive in to test it while I waited.

its no biggy if i wreck it....it was cheap, I just hate waiting forever to rip a DVD to my HD
PS...it is supposed to rip DL DVD's at 8x. what is that in KB/s? -
11k, sheeesh, Im really suckin the hind tit at 3500k
if it's not firmware related, what else do you think it might be? Im thinking it may possible be the aspi layer that nvidia installs with their nforce2 mobo drivers...just a guess though. -
Is the drive in PIO or DMA mode. You can check this in the device manager IDE Channels. If not in DMA Mode, try removing the IDE Channel and restart your computer allowing windows to find the IDE Channel again. This should correct it.
What's your drive configuration (slave/master)?? -
where exactly in dev man is it? Im not seeing the DMA/IPO option...drive is secondary master
-
Look under SECONDARY IDE CHANNEL.

I'll ditto not using hacked firmware. Been there, done that, won't do it again. It's cheaper, less troublesome and better to get a faster burner if you are so inclined. Some hacked firmware is pretty good, unfortunately some is pretty bad and as mentioned can ruin your drive. It's hard to know what's good and what's bad unless you get it from someone directly that's already used it on their identical burner. I'd say stay with the latest firmware from the manufacturer.
Check your other system components and running processes. Do you have a 2+gig processor? Or are you running a 1gig or less processor? How much RAM do you have? Make sure that the slow rate is not due to other programs running in the background. As we have mentioned in other threads, Norton and McAfee will slow your system down to a snail's pace. -
Go here for firmware:

BTW...XP SP2 doesn't show DMA mode anymore,use Nero InfoTool. -
athlon xp 2500+
1 gb ram
machine is very fast, except for this 1 problem! -
not sure if its in DMA? How do i put in DMA?

Use hacked FW if it's available. I've used dozens of hacked FWs with not a single problem. Even if something goes wrong you should be able to revert back to the original FW in most cases.

OK, I killed the nvidia IDE driver its looking good.......up to 6,182kb/s and climbing

Glad to see you fixed it. However, I've noticed that when I'm shrinking anything more than 80% that it rips slower (while using AEC in shrink).
