Sorry, I've researched here but can't seem to get it to work.
I'm trying to encode an avi to dvd.
3ivx D4, 640x272, PAL
I change the frame rate to ntsc. I tried setting autosize to dvd 16:9 but the video gets squashed. If i encode with quicktime (w letterbox) for some reason it doesn't encode the video. I tried entering the letterbox values in the filters window at that was better but still distorted the video a bit.
P.S. this is all previewing in dvd player before burning, shouldn't make a difference, right?
what should my proper settings be??
also what's the order of the letterbox fields, is it like top, bottom left, right?
If anyone can help, I really appreciate it

If you use the preset DVD mpeg2enc, then all the letterboxing should be done automatically. Just make sure to drop the file and then select the preset afterwards.
If you use the preset DVD ffmpeg for automatic letterboxing you need to turn on decode with quicktime and letterbox.
For manual letterboxing with ffmpeg you need to turn of the automatic letterboxing features, leave the preset defaults, and use a size of 720x360 with letterboxing of 60 for both top and bottom (60,60,0,0). Set autosize to DVD 16:9
I've also found that things, sound sync etc, work out best, when converting from PAL, if you use NTSC film and pulldown than if you go directly to NTSC.

i also got some problem in letterbox video. i would like to manually letterbox an avi on top and bottom so that when i burn it into vcd i can see whole picture. so this what i do.
my avi properties
Divx
640x480
NTSC FILM
i want to add 48pixels both top and bottom so i make this preset
Divx ffmpeg
Video Parameters
video size:640x480
autosize:unconstrained
framerate:NTSC FILM
Video Bitrate: i click the best preset
Audio
Mp3 48000 128kbps the same as the source file
Filters
i put 48,48,0,0
Option
i just click high quality option
Then when i watched the result with quicktime fullscreen but there's letterbox all around the movie, when i watched it with vlc it turns out great. But when i try to burn it into vcd with toast titanium the preview shows that it also automatically add letterbox in the left and right of the movies.
if anyone can help i would really grateful for it

zheon,
There's something you're missing about what the VCD format is - by definition, you can't burn a DivX file to a VCD. You need to encode it into a 352x288 PAL or 352x240 NTSC MPEG-1 file, not an AVI file.
If you try to put that AVI file into Toast, then Toast will *re*-convert it to MPEG-1 at 352 x whatever size in order to make it a VCD.
The only way you can burn a DivX .avi to a CDR is as a Data CD. Only a couple players (such as the Philips DVP642) will play that format.
You'd be better off just doing the letterboxing straight to the MPEG file within ffmpegX, using a VCD preset.
