Yesterday, I was reading a guide (or a topic) on how to convert Xvid to DVD (MPEG2). The author used nothing but VirtualDub. He was re-encoding the video file only (no audio - this part I don't remember but he demuxed the AVI-AC-3 later) as uncompressed to get an unspoiled file, as he said. In fact, I guess this unspoiled thing is not so unspoiled because uncompressed is RGB and the original file must be YUV. This has been discussed around here because when people convert from MPEG2 to XVID with VD, they should choose Fast Recompress Mode (YUV-YUV) avoiding Full Processing Mode (YUV-RGB-YUB - could cause some blurs on the video) which is defintely inevitable if you want to "turn on" some filter in VD. The thing is, this guide was so simple and straightforward but I can't find it anymore. It's not listed under XVID to DVD guides....Can anyone help to find that guide or topic please? Thanks in advance.

Well to output MPEG2 you would need to use ffdshow or yMPEG, so that would be a place to start. Also rather than looking for XviD guides you might want to look for guides based on container. Converting one avi is the same as converting another even if one uses XviD for video and the other VP6.2. Where as converting an XviD DSM is different to converting an XviD avi.

Thanks. Unfortunately I haven't found that guide (or topic), but I do remember the author stated - using VirtualDub to convert the Xvid file as Uncompressed (but then there would be questions on the color space, if the uncompressed file is YUV of RGB and then recompressing again as MPEG2, the amount of space for the uncompressed file, etc, etc. etc.).
Anyway, I guess there is a better solution (and more simple one) for this - Frame Serve. Yes, you can frameserve from VD directly to any MPEG compressor (instad of choosing to save the Xvid file as uncompressed).
1.Open VirtualDub or VirtualDubMod or VirtualDub-MPEG2, select your Xvid file, go to <video> and hit <direct stream copy> - no compresion here, absolutely no one (if you're using VirtualDub-MPEG2 you may also hit <no audio>);
2.Hit <File> and then <Start Frameserver> since VirtualDub has a built-in Frameserver - name the file as you wish.
3.Open this fake AVI with any MPEG compressor:
-Vegas (it has a built-in MainConcept MPEG encoder);
-MainConcept Stand-Alone;
-TMPGEnc (for me, this is the best one - $ = excellent results);
-CCE (I guess there's a U$50.00 version available on the web);
-Canopus ProCoder (although this one is better for encoding interlaced DV)...
4.Open VirtualDubMod, select Xvid file, <Stream>, <Stream list>, Demux the AC-3 file (if your Xvid has AC-3) or any other WAV, MP3...
5.Find a way to demux the subs if they're muxed with the Xvid (Soft Muxed Subs); if the subs are Soft subs (that comes in the same folder where the Xvid file is - separate files, one for the video, the other one for the subs - they are ready!)
6.Open DVD Architect and drop both the MPEG2 and the demuxed AC-3 file there. Import the subs right from the folder where they are originally located along with the Xvid file (if soft subs, etc....) or import the demuxed subs. Guess you can choose also TMPGEnc DVD Author - which is a great application.
Now - do you know how to install Debugmode FrameServe for VirtualDub?????
Thanks in advance. -
If you feel you must use VirtualdubMod and TMPGEnc because you have them on your PC, I found this guide...
https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/186739.php
but the simplist way to convert XviD to DVD is with VSO XviDToDVD. I just tried a test file with AC3 audio and it converted the XviD to DVD VOB with no problem so the extra time and effort it takes to use VirtualDubMod and TMPGEnc is a waste of time.
If you want to make a menu with chapters, use TMPGEnc DVD Author to create and burn the DVD.
If you don't need a menu then use DVDshrink.
In Re-Author mode, choose browser and find the main move / title 1 and click burn. If you have DVDdecrypter installed (which everyboby should), it will automatically burn the DVD once the ISO image is created. -

One more important note here. Forget Vegas. I have tried everything and Vegas pops-up screens with error messages. Both the original file and the .vdr seem incompatible with Vegas. Any ideas??????
