It's probably in PIO mode instead of DMA. Control Panel > System > Device Manager > IDE controller. Then go to the channel your DVD burner is on and check for DMA mode. Change it there to DMA if available.

  3. I think your burner might require hacked firmware to achieve higher rip speeds (assuming you're talking about reading/ripping).

A number of dvd writers at locked to rip at 2X max. you need a hacked firmware to unlock the limited rip speed.

It took a long time to do WHAT!!!!
Please folks,,,,, INCLUDE AS MUCH DETAILS AS POSSIBLE.

Sorry about the shout but it is impossible for us to guess what it is you are haveing a problem with. Is it writting, reading speed or both.

As was already stated. You will need hacked FW to read beyon 2x . Unless you are in PIO mode you ought to be able to write up to your rated speed with the proper media. Well actually not really a true 16x all the way through the burn. Unly maybe the last 1/3 assuming your buffer stays up.

We're talking about using a HACKED FIRMWARE, not the official firmware. Updating the firmware will do nothing.

go to www.rpc1.org and look up your dvd writer, download the firmware from that page.

I cant point you to the right page, because you did not provide enough information. You only mentioned you have a NEC, and not the model.

Do you have an NEC-3500 or an NEC-3520?

Im not sure if you can revert back to the original firmware. Your hacked firmware can be downloaded here

I can warn you that using a hacked firmware may invalidate the warranty of the drive.

  13. I doubt it is your drive, as I have one of these in one of my machines and don't have that problem. You may need to enable DMA, or it may be your software. Use the latest version of DVDDecrypter and check your preference settings. Nyah Levi

  14. ok so i thought that my DMA was enabled but all i can do is click that DMA if available, and when it says current transfer mode it says PIO mode. That is under secondary IDE channel. The primary IDE channel has DMA for both. I dont know 1. if my dvd burner is under primary or secondary, and 2. how to make that PIO mode DMA if that is even needed.

If you have Nero, or you can DL it; From the Nero toolkit, run Nero InfoTool. It will tell you the position and mode of your drives.

You can delete the channel that your DVD drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. Safer to do this on a channel that your boot drive is not on, but even then, it should work OK in most cases.

This usually works. If not, it gets more complicated. Could be the cable or drive position on the cable, the burner, the jumpers, the software, the driver firmware, the OS and a few other things.

well im sure i messed things up quite a bit. after runnin infotool it only found my CD ROM drive although my burner does work, and is listed under the config: as the slave drive under secondary IDE drive. Also after running NERO Speed Test, i get some kind of error where as i didnt before. Also DMA is off on the secondary IDE drive, but i cant turn it on, i guess ill try removin it and rebooting, but so far not lookin pretty. Anyone that can help me fix this i can reward with Paypal $ or deals on any of my actuions (ebay powerseller)

Don't lose hope. This should be an easy enough fix.

  18. i think what really mesed things up was when i did this:

    Code:
Following is the mechanism that has worked for me, please try it at your own risk, it involves hacking the registry:

    1. Open RegEdit

    2. Find the following KEY:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\ Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x

3.The last four digits will be 0000, 0001, 0002, 0003, and so on.
4.Under each key, delete all occurences of the following values:
    MasterIdDataChecksum
    SlaveIdDataChecksum
    5. Reboot the computer. Windows will now redetect DMA settings.

I restored the registry after that, but i dont think its the same.

Do you know how to get into your bios to check ? It's usually the delete key or F2 as it is booting up. You may have to change it there if Windows keeps going down to Pio. Are you using a 80 ribbon for your Burner ?Set it at Master? You may have answered some of these but i'm just throwing things of of the top of my head.

That seems to be the speed that it should read at now without the hacked firmware so try to re-flash with a firmware with riplock removed from here: http://www.micheldeboer.nl/firmware/3500.html

All hacked firmware does not automatically have the riplock removed.
