this actually happened to me once, and the fix was surprsingly simple.. although i dont know if its repeatable.

i removed the boot drive from an xp pro w/ sp1 machine and put it in as a non-primary master drive in another pc with xp pro w/ sp1, it ran a scan disk on the drive and replaced some files and fixed it all up.. well enough to put the drive back in the other computer and have it boot in to windows..

  2. Those methods are long and tedious.
Much easier to do an "over-the-top" repair.

actually, it was pretty quick.. couldnt have took more than 10 minutes, from removing the drive to inserting it in the other computer, running the scan & putting it back in the other computer.

now a full surface scan of the drive would have been long and tedious.

  4. lumis, I wasn't referring to your method, I was referring to the methods described in the OP's links.

    windows xp pro w/ sp1

i imagine it would work with all flavours of xp though, and maybe windows 2000.

it cant hurt. (well it might, i just highly doubt it)

  7. Well did some more reading on this problem. It seems that there are two thing you can do to stop this from happening to you. Take your Windows XP CD and slipstream SP1 or Sp2 in the CD

    http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-10590_11-5630356.html?part=rss&tag=feed&subj=tr#

The bug is in XP with SP1 on the CD and some PC have a problem. Its a Windows bug.

I went back to Windows 2000 but may go back to XP after I slipstream SP2
