Ok I hope this post is in the right forum!
I wonder if somebody can give me advice on what would be the best methods for what I want to achieve.
Basically I want to rip a DVD and try and preserve its quality as much as possible but compress it and have it as one file i.e. not VOBs.
I will then keep this good quality compressed file as backup and use it to burn to DVDr as when required.
what would be the best way for me to achieve this e.g burn and convert to AVI and then re-author to DVD? what tools can i use? I preferably want to use the least amount of tools necessary to eliminate lots of steps.
cheers

Uh... you'll want to keep an ISO!
Use DVD Shrink, have it output to an ISO file, and burn as desired.
