  1. When I convert video from a "set-top" DVD recorder made DVD to MPEG-1 using ffmpeg, the video stalls for a while (some times for minutes) when I seek to a location - it will then start playback.

I can play, and seek w/o delay using Media Player Classic. However, I need to send the video out to people that will only be able to use WMP.

I can usually 'fix' the problem by re-encoding the mpeg-1 in TMPGEnc - but this adds a lot of time and degrades the video by re-encoding.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

try just remultiplex the mpeg1 with tmpgenc. in tmpgenc under file->mpeg tools->multiplex.

  3. Video stalling during playback in WMP is normal. Depending on your CPU speed, it may take Windoze quite a while to chug through your mpg file to find the proper point to resume playback.

Solution? Avoid Windows Media Player for playback. When I open an mpg file with Womble MPG VCR or any of the WinDVD or PowerDVD or Ravisent Cinemaster DVD player software, there's no slowdown and no delay in playback. The fault is due to Micro$haft's crummy WMP, not your mpg file.

  4. Thank you for your suggestions.

The file plays/seeks w/o issue or delay in WMP AFTER going through TMPGEnc. So there must be something in the file out of ffmpeg that isn't quite right.
