  1. Ok, I know that this is probably something I am going to need a TBC for, but I am trying to figure out anything else that will work to fix this problem. Basically when I capture anything from a VHS the top of the screen is glitchy and white and there will be blips occassionally.

I have a JVC HR-A34U model VCR. I am running this to my computer via composite inputs. I am pretty sure that it does not have a SVHS output.

I have an ATI All-in-Wonder 9700 capture card and I am capturing with the ATI TV program.

Is there anything I can try to maybe solve this without a TBC?

    Thanks guys,

    BJ

  2. Sounds like overscan. It is caused by your capture card picking up the entire video image, even the part caused by the rotating head on your VCR. You don't see it normally because VCRs are designed not to display the portion on your TV, but your capture card is showing it to you. If you go ahead and convert it to DVD, it won't show on your TV, if you want to view it only on your computer, programs like VDub with its Null filter can crop it off.

  3. Here are some examples:

I think you may be partly right, but you can see that the image behind is showing through.

In example 4 and 5 you can see frames next to each other where one you can see the top and the next is white.

  4. It also looks like poor tracking, or bad quality tape. Are all your tapes like this?

This is a known issue with the ATI cards. What your seeing is the ATI detecting a false Macrovision siganal. The tape will play fine on a VCR, can be captured with other cards....... Having been over this quite a bit and having a lot of input from many of the fine folks here it's my conclusion that due to small errors in the tape and ATI's sensitivity to them that's what it is. MV afterall is just a error. Also note that the ATI is not the only card affected by this, it just seems to be the worst.

    There's more here: www.nepadigital.com/mv

Sorry Uppitycracker besides a TBC and possibly other devices such as some of the Sima products AFAIK there's no solution.

I sent you a PM make sure you read it.

  6. Hmm, after some tinkering I turned off the "Video Stabilizer" function and this seems to have fixed the problem.

Let me try more tapes and let you know.

That's possible too, your screencaps don't look quite as bad as mine and I noticed you didn't mention the flickering which was prevalent on all my captures. The trouble is that it may work fine for a while maybe even a half hour and then all of sudded for few frames screw up which to me is unacceptable. Good Luck.

    BTW...... Go Eagles.
