  1. Hi all,

I recorded a show on my sat using an Archos AV-420 PVR. It records in AVI format.

I then downloaded the file to my PC for editing using Vegas Video 3.0
    The unedited file is 956mb.
Once edited (commercials taken out) and rendered into an AVI with Vegas Video, I end up with a 10GB file !?!

What am I doing wrong? This file should be less then the initial file as i removed 15minutes of video....

Can someone lend a hand and explain to me what I'm doing wrong?

Your original AVI might be a compressed AVI. When you render out are you redering to uncompressed avi? That could be the reason. The audio might be alse reencoded to PCM helping increase the file size even more. Just a few minutes of uncompressed avi is like a gig.

When you out put or render out. make sure it is not uncompressed AVI
If you ultimately want to author it to DVD you should render to MPG2 with the built in Main Concept MPG encoder within Vegas. Then you can author that in sonic Architect is you have it or just about any other authoring prog.

follow me here, choose RENDER as from the file menu,If you just want to compreess the sucker, pull down to VIDEO FOR WINDOWS .AVI, but on a seperate TABBED PAGE under Custom Settings, you must choose the COMPRESSION CODEC.. You must've had UNCOMPRESSED HERE, so dial up something like
DIVX, XVID, or the hdeous default codecs like CINEPAK, or those without sound like ANIMATION..and play with compressing the file here

Now if you want to make a DVD with this file...I'm assuming you do...
IGNORE alll the above and when you're fininshed cutting (splitting) out the chaff, then RENDER AS but pull down to MPEG-2 , the proper format for DVD creation..
If the window below "MPEG-2" says DVD NTSC, or DVD PAL...you're in business cause you'll be making a VBR 720x480 compressed file that should be less than the AVI you started with by far.

  6. Thanks guys, I rendered it to MPEG1 with DIVX codec, and I ended up with 630mb from 960mb.

What is the difference between MPEG1 and MPEG2?

talk about confused..you may have misspoke but this -'DIVX' in MPG?---is not possible
I rendered it to MPEG1 with DIVX codec
as MPG 1 and 2 are forms of VIDEO COMPRESSION
so is DIVX, but its a totally other form of compression that uses the file extension .AVI, although the DIVX is MPG-4

    got it!?

    ITS NOT EASY:
MPEG-1 : COMPRESSED VIDEO with least "compression" dialed in

MPEG 2 : COMPRESSED VIDEO with more "compression" dialed in
(also used most for DVD standard)

MPEG-4: COMPRESSED VIDEO with most "compression" dialed in
(also good for internet..same as .WMV but not by Microsoft)
