  1. i've been trying to figure a way to speed up my ripping of dvd's, smartripper and dvd decoder won't go any faster than 1.9x!!!!!!!!!! what can i do??????????? i have a toshiba 16x drive.

  2. If you hadn't said Toshiba, I would have tried to bust my head to help you out there, but Toshiba DVD drives are crap! plain and simple! if you get to 1.9x, feel honoured, i've seen a 16x/48x drive that barely reached 1.2x!

  3. Sadly, my Toshiba drive goes up to a max 1.6 (usually hovering around 1.2) so count your blessings...wink. One of these days I'll replace the bastard....

  4. I find speed is generally related to a) the DVD and b) decoding of the video. On my junky 12x DVD-ROM, I usually get about 1x - 4x on rented encoded DVD's, 4x - 6x on my home bought encoded DVD's, and roughly 8x on non-encoded DVD's.

I find that ~2x - 3x is about what I expect each rip.

    Hi All,

Can anyone post several "excelent" DVD-ROM drives that will shorten our ripping time? I am getting 1.1x max.

    Regards,

  6. I've had a Pioneer 10x/40x, and now I have a 16x/40x, and both drives were just about the same speed, ranging minimum rip time of 5x to 7x, and with the 16x drive I reach upto 14x sometimes.

  7. I was wondering why my ripping was going to slow, now that I know.....what's a better DVD Drive than tobsiha???

  8. Sefy,
Do you know how much CPU usage is involved in the decoding process and whether or not having a fast CPU would make a large difference in RIP speeds?

    Thanks!

  9. epic47, get a Pioneer

bewley, i've had the same ripping performance on both my old Duron 700 and my current Athlon 1000, so if CPU has any boost, it's propably not by that much.

  10. Make sure you have DMA on! I went from 1.3x to 5.2x just by setting dma.

    -Smonkey

(an easy way to make sure it's on is to run a version of powerdvd)

  11. epic47....almost every DVD-Drive is better then Tosiba for DVD Ripping but a Tosiba for perfromance is okay but for ripping it just suk

  12. Unfortunately, Smonkey, my Toshiba drive doesn't support DMA on....I don't know if others do. But it causes ALL KINDS of trouble if it is on.....sad really.

  18. heres a good one
i brought a 16x memorex cdrw a while ago and a floppy came with it with a supposed high speed cdrw driver on it i thought what the hell in for a penny in for a pound and installed it
and to my surprise the side effect of this was my ripping speed with a 10x pioneer went from 2-3x to 7-8x
i then uninstalled it and the speed went back down to 2-3x
so reinstalled and up it went
i also have the most up todate aspi layer from roxio which helps also
if any 1 wants to try this driver p/m me and ill email to you as its only tiny

Thanks Sefy! I was wondering as my rips using unencoded DVD's always seem to go so much faster and I was wondering if it could be something to do with the decode step or if it could be something else..?

    Thanks!

  21. bewley, most of the speed is the actually access to the DVD and the copying from it, and Toshiba DVD's suck big time! and trust me, i'm not the only one who says it.

  22. Sefy,
I don't have a Toshiba... Hell, I'm not even sure the brand I have... It's just that I have a few *ahem* mature titles that are not encoded... These fly when I rip 'em, but all my other encoded DVD's take much, much longer... I have a PIII-550. Maybe that's the problem?!?

    Thanks,

  23. bewley, well, I sorta doubt it, as i've mentioned, decoding does not take that long, and it's not even done when copying, it's done prior to copying, if you notice Smart Ripper first looks for the key, then it starts copying the movie.

That's why I said the decoding is not what usually takes the time, unless you can actually see the process holding a long time while Smart Ripper is looking for a key.

Hmm.. I have a Pioneer that offers me nothing but headaches (rips slow, but the real problem is REGULAR CD's)... I use it for DVD's only, as that's the only thing working flawlessly with it.

I also have a Toshiba 6x DVD-Rom drive as a backup for one day installing into my Apex 500W (when its drive craps out)... Spec-wise, it's a better unit.

Side note too... I owned a Pioneer 343 for all on an hour, it was the worst peice of crap hardware I had ever seen.

Pioneer doesn't seem to have a good track record in homerpez-land. Are you SURE they're good drives? Maybe I just need an upgrade (after all, I'm only ripping 1.3x WITH an ASPI layer in XP...)
