  1. DVD backups that I'm creating using DVDXCopy or Decrypt/DVDShrink seem to play fine on my DVD player, but when I play the DVD a month or two later I start getting artifacts (often around T6 or T7, but sometimes earlier or later) and the DVD hangs.

    Here's info on my system:
    DVD burner: NEC 2510A
    DVD media: TDK Print-on DVD-R
    DVD player: Toshiba SD-K510

Both the burner and player are +R/-R compatible.
Although DVD+R is supposed to be slightly more universally compatible than -R, DVD+Rs don't record well. I've heard that this may be because DVDXCopy won't write to DVD+R. Consequently, I'm using -R media, which almost always play for at least a month or two before artifacts show up.

I'm using CD Stomper DVD labels, and it's possible that the adhesive is slowly degrading the DVDs, but I would think that labels designed for DVDs would take this into account.

Does anyone have an explanation for what is happening, and what can be done to remedy the problem?

    Thanks,

    G

  3. Try cleaning the disk. I have the same problem occasionally and it usually corrects by wiping off the disk.

Yep...I'll bet money that's the problem.
Just because they sell cigarettes doesn't mean they're safe.
