  1. Here's the good news:

    http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=1&sku_id=0665000...01&newdeptid=2

    Maxell DVD-media. 100 for 39.99 (canadian)

    here's the bad news

3 hours after the sale went on..the stores had NOTHING in stock.

I doubt any media made it TO the stores...as 2 stores in my city were wiped out.

  2. What???!!!
    39.99? I dont think so.

As of now, until April 16, you can just go to your local Office Depot and buy the Maxell 100pk for $37.99
    + and -

    Ahh, yours is for Canada.

Get a raincheck. Everytime something was out of stock at FutureShop I always get a raincheck. If the clerk doesn't offer it then ask for it. Once in a while I get someone who says the discs (or other item) will be in tomorrow etc... but when I insist they always provide one.

I don't need any discs right now but in Canada that's a good price. I've noticed a few good sales lately. I watch the Monitor magazine too which is available free in my area. One smaller supplier Cas-tek is offering generic DVD-r at $6.99 ca for a 25 spindle. I'm tempted to try a pack just for fun. At $8.04 with tax it's not much of a risk. If I don't like them, I can easily sell the extra blanks 2 for a buck at my next yard sale and still come out ahead.

  4. Nothing to lose sleep over as I've been reading that Maxells have been IDing as Riteks lately. Missing out on 100 Ritek for $39.99 isn't worth kicking yourself.

  5. The Maxell dvd's everyone is looking for must be labelled Made in Japan. In this casde you will get Maxell's own brand media. If you get made in Taiwan, you will get Ritek.

As for Cas-tech, i know the owners and they are getting some Taiyo Yudens in shortly. The generic media is never good media, but they have the best prices in Ottawa for Ridata media. Although I don't like the 8X ridata media as of late, but if you need Ritek then get them there.

well they dont seem to list a factory in japan to make media in their annual report - in fact i'm not sure they ever made any media (they never made cassette tapes) .

i think MXL is made by TDK , but im not positive about it . may also be ritek - as they do use a lot of ritek also and media codes are very much alike .. but I heard tdk ..

i could be wrong - but i dont know where their factory is ..

    No rush to buy these.
The quality of Maxell discs has hit the shitter lately (referring to MXLG03...which is what these are). I wouldn't be surprised if Ritek is making these ones because my KProbe scans are very similar to some crappy Ridata's that I had kickin' around. MXLG02 NEVER had bad KProbe scans for me before. These MXLG03 are gold topped by the way.

I got the Made In Japan 8x 100 pack (MXL RG03) at the Shawnessy FS in Calgary, last one on the shelf, on Thursday night (last night of the sale) - last one in the city, too, as the other stores were out of stock. Personally, I've had little problems at all with them in my NEC 3500, and my PI/PIF scans of my 16x burns with them are still quite nice, so it may hinge on your burner / firmware combination... All in all, a very good deal for $40 Canadian, and I quite like the dark gold top colour.

Maxell does make their own media. If you get a spindle marked as MIJ, they will probably be maxell's own media (MXLGR02/03 -R, MAXELL 001/002 +R). 02 are 4x DVD-R's and 03 are 8x DVD-R's. For +, 001 are 4x and 002 are 8x.
Some 4x MIJ maxell media are Taiyo yuden + and -.

Maxell's own MIJ media are comparible to Taiyo yuden quality. The media thats considered the best by many recordable media experts are Maxell MIJ, Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim Made in Singapore media and thats all i buy =].
I currently have Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R's, Maxell 8x DVD-R's (MXLGR03) and Verbatim Made in Singapore DL+R's. Ive never burnt a single coaster on my NEC ND-3520.

btw, Bestbuy Canada is having a customer appreciation sale on sunday and they have 20% off all CD/DVD media. They currently have the maxell +/-R's for 24.99, so they will be 19.99 on the CA sale (sunday, May 1st).

i have a very good source (The Digital Dolphin, a recordable media expert).

The Digital Dolphin doesnt really like Verbatim media (i myself like it), but he says Maxell MIJ media (MXLRG0x, MAXELL00x) are the only other DVD's that are comparible to Taiyo Yuden as far as quality.

Ive also read a lot of other websites saying Verbatim Made in singapore media is also top of the line but are kind of hard to find. A lot of verbatim's media is made in Taiwan and even though it has the "MCC" media code, theyre actually manufactured by CMC Magnetics which arent nearly as good as MCC made in singapore.

    oh lol.

if you sign up to their newsletter online, you will get an e-mail about the CA sale. It starts at 5pm online and in-store except for Manitoba.

if you want to know about good deals in Canada, keep checking back at Redflagdeals.com. A lot of people in Canada just post hot deals on that website.

Yes there is. There are 2 of them. One of Regent avenue, and one on St James Avenue: http://www.bestbuy.ca/FSStoreLocator/Cities.asp?prov=MB&logon=&langid=EN&dept=0

They are almost right next door to a Futureshop too..

    Hi everyone,

so I did just use my rain-check at futureshop for these DVD's but now I'm not too sure about my decision. They do say "made in Taiwan" and they are 8x (I somehow remember the sale was for 4x). I have a pioneer 108 frimware 1.17, and I'm on a Mac (if this matters to anyone ). Should I keep these or bring them back? Thanks for any help.

    P.S they were 39.99 + Tax Canadian

Went to Futureshop tonight. I shit you guys not, the few Maxell spindles they had there had the "Made In" writing obscured with yellow marker. I complained and was greeted with a bright smile from an east Indian fellow. he said that all their media was made in Taiwan. So it shouldn't matter. :P I picked up the BenQ 4x SONY04D1 discs instead. Apparently the 8x BenQ are no longer SONY04D1. I didn't buy them to confirm though.

  23. I wouldn't trust any media that does not say 'Made in Japan' on it. If Futureshit/Best Lie doesn't have it, I'm going elsewhere. I'm not going to spend my money on chance, as I've been screwed before. No japan, no deal.

I keep phoning my local futureshop about those, yet I hear "No, not in yet, we'll get them on sunday" And I DO have a raincheck for that package. If the 30 days is up and they still don't have them, I will be pissed, SO pissed.

So I guess the general consensus is "made in Japan"= good and "made in Taiwan"=bad. At this price (39.99) is this 100 spindle really a bad deal? Oh well, Walmart is selling sony 50's for 24.99...also 8x. Opinions?

I walk away from sony DVD-R's. Not only are they not made in japan (none I've seen anyways, made in china I believe), but I tried to copy a friend's DVD-R (which was a sony) and NO program could copy it, OR play it.

They're made in Malaysia. But at Sony's own plant. IF they have the SONY04D1 media code I'd trust them. I've backed up many a Playstation game on them. No glitches or skips. On movies and TV shows as well. I've used 3 25 pc spindles so far. No coasters. Not one.

Wal-Mart (Canada) has 50 pc. spools of "Made In Japan" 8X Maxell for $30CAD tax included. That is their regular price. These are the Gold Topped ones. The store here also had the 4X Yellow topped ones. Both types work great in all my equipment.

Future Shop 100 pc. Maxell spools that came in the other day were all rebranded "Made in Taiwan" 8X. Those will not work in my Panasonic E80H DVD recorder, while the Japanese made ones do. Oddly enough, the Sony 8X white topped discs also work very well in all my equipment. Since these discs are also under $30 for 50, they are a pretty good deal if I run out of discs in the middle of a project.

Also to note, the Japanese made +R Maxell 8X discs are quite plentiful. Must be no one here using those in burners. I just counted 8 100 pc. spools on the rack at Future Shop and no -R at all...

Nah, the made in Malaysia Sony discs should be manufactured by Daxon (part of BenQ group). Some discs with Sony MID are also made in Austria, Japan and Taiwan though.
