  1. After 2 days my new Mustek 1770 Portable DVD player failed. It froze three times during Star Was Attack of the Clones and twice during X-men. Today it would not load a dvd at all very sad. Bought it at Costco for $149 but since it failed so fast just figure it was bad from the company. Shame cause it's not a bad unit, metal case unlike others in the price range and good picture and sound for the money. I would rather have a Panasonic but cost over $300 which i don't want to spend. Beside DVD Technology is old even in a portable player so for $149 you should get a dependable unit. The money is all in the screen so i can figure higher price units would have a better screen. It's goes back to costco today and i'll give it another one a try.

  2. returned the player and got another one. well see how well it hold up. The women who handled the return said she has the one with 10" screen that sells for $300 and she has had no trouble with it. One thing i remember when it tried to load the dvd after it failed you could hear 1 beep and then the sound of a motor coming down from speed. I know with computers that the number of beeps you hear at boot can give you an idea as which componet failed. Do these units have the same warnning sounds like computer do? What would 1 beep mean since when it worked you did not hear any beep.

  3. well the new player is doing the same thing. IT looks like when the laser reaches the outside of the disc it gets stuck. The picture freezes then skips then freezes and you can hear a grinding noise over again like when you put the disc in the players for the first time. I guess thats' the sound of the laser moving into postion. the screen will go blue if you wait long enough. I need to open the cover where the disc will stop spinning and some times the laser sits on the outside of the disc and somethime it movies to the inside of the disc. My guess they sent a bunch of bad players to Costco.

  4. returned the second player and gave up on them. When i looked at the $300 10" screen model of mintek portable dvd player i noticed the laser was covered but the 1770 isn't. Trouble is in the laser motor or screw it gets stuck after a while on both players. I email Mintek about this but never heard back. GOOD COMPANY
