As I try to import some avi-files into MovieMaker, it does not succeed. I get to see a message "Avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. "

I have created video clips on VirtualDub and as I try to watch those clips on VirtualDub, I get a message "Couldnīt locate decompressor for format HCW2. VirtualDub requies a Video for Windows (VFW) compatible codec to decompress video. DirectShow codecs, such as those used by Windows Media Player, are not suitable."

Sorry to bother with this matter..., but which codecs programme would resolve the problem, please?

Maybe try loading the AVI into GSpot or AVICodec, then posting a screenshot here ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

Thanks for the links! I tried them both, but got no answer. AVIcodec gave as answer "unknown" and GSspot mentions that HCW2 again...

For VirtualDub I did not select any codecs, it just went automatically along with Windows XP.

I tried to post the screen shot earlier, but will try again, LOL.

Edited to add: Unfortunately I did not succeed in doing that, but here the screen shot can be viewed:

HCW2 is not listed as a known 4CC codec

if you did this in virtualdub - and didnt pick a compression type ... it should be uncompressed avi

    sounds like a corrupted file

Sorry, I forgot to mention that via AVIcodec it was the V. codec name that was unknown, A1 codec name is mentioned as PCM.

I donīt know about corrupted files, that the same has happened in past with several avi files saved from Internet (meaning an avi- file has not opened via MediaPlayer or MovieMaker).
