  2. Did you specifically use the upgrade for your particular player, 642k/69?

I found a link to the official 1109 firmware for the 642K/69. There is a zip file there with the firmware update.

  4. Did you try hitting the subtitle button on the remote while it is playing? With the 642/37 there are 3 types of subtitle charsets. 1 each for Latin/Germanic, Russian, and Central European.

I don't know your model, 642k/69. I think it may be used in Asia and might have support for Chinese. Is there a specific Philips model for the Middle East? You might try installing that firmware, if you can find it. Or else you can try to contact Philips directly.

At present, this player only supports the following character sets for external subtitle files:

    Latin
Central European (also using the Latin alphabet)
    Cyrillic

That's it. For those who are interested, external subtitle files in Cyrillic MUST be encoded as ISO-8859-5 characters, which is a rather bizarre choice.

    Thanks all,
I think that 742k/69 is for Asia or just Meddle ‎ East. I don't know exactly
but I tried to contact philips through the email but I didn't get any replay except the automatic replay.

does any one knows how to edit the firmware update and in what language is written?
