i record television programs off tv a buch and put them on a dvd, and have never noticed this before

    here is my method;

    1) record to dvd-rw with pioneer 220s

    2) extract video from dvd to mpeg (dvd spec) with tmpgenc mpeg editor

    3) cut out segments (cutting out commercials) with womble mpeg vcr

    4) create dvd files with TDA

    5) create iso with img tool classic

    6) burn iso with dvd decrypter

now usually i cut at the commercial breaks and those are my chapters, so i can see why i've never noticed a pause, probably because it goes to a black screen for half a second..

but the event i recorded on saturday was different, i needed to set chapter points during the middle of the "action", so i cut at those points. TDA automatically had each mpeg as chapter, which was good with me so i didnt have to scan through the mpeg and set chapters.. not to mention the fact that womble mpeg vcr is frame accurate at cutting.. with TDA you have to wait for an I-frame which is not nearly as accurate.

while playing back the dvd on my dvd players i experience a slight pause, from half a second to 1/10th of a second. its quite noticable.. when played back on my pc (from iso mounted through daemon tools with powerdvd) i dont experience the pause at all, but thats to be expected..

is there any way around this pause aside from setting actual chapter points within one large mpeg?

    thanks.

There in lies your problem. Chapter points are not cuts, they are markers. Once you cut the file you get titles. The solution is in your last question - set proper chapter points and author correctly and you will get the correct result.

I don't think so. But why are you cutting into a bunch of mpegs? You can cut out the commercials (and anything else you don't want) with Womble and then create one file to load into DVD Author. Leave Womble open with the edit file still there and you can quickly find the points where you cut things out and use the time marker to find the same spot in the file in DVD Author.

Why are you using TMPGEnc Editor to extract the video and then switching to womble to cut out commercials? You can use the mpeg Editor to cut out commercials. Or you could start with womble and use it to extract the video from the dvd to mpeg.

From my reading, the idea was that he wanted chapter stops at the commercial breaks anyway, and this was one way to get them. It saved him going back through the entire program and adding them. Unfortunately, that little time saving has a cost . . . . .

okay.. i probably didnt phrase it correctly.

i do want chapter points where the commerical breaks would be, thats fine..

but i also needed chapter points during the middle of the event. i needed them to be in precise locations so i cut that part in to 2 pieces, exactly where i wanted the chapter points. and TDA made them chapter points.

i dont notice the delay at the chapter points when it goes to commercial break because the screen fades to black, and thats fine.. but the problem arises when i cut during the middle of the event when there is movement and noise.. thats when you notice the slight pause..

and i'm guessing thats the reason i'm noticing the pause for the first time..

i guess i'll have to set chapter points with TDA, even though it isnt as precise as the cuts & chapters i would get with womble.. but atleast i wont have that delay.

bobk: i use either tmpgenc mpeg editor or ulead dvd movie factory to extract the video.. the reason i use womble is because i'm much more used to it than tmpgen mpeg editor, and it does a good job. i dont think tmpgenc mpeg editor would do a better job.. maybe i'm wrong, i've never tried it for that purpose though.
