Your friend is behind a firewall.
I've run into this situation before.

And if it's not a firewall problem, are you trying to send an .exe file? If so, Messenger automatically cancels the transfer because it could potentially be a virus carrier. My workaround was to right-click the file and .rar it (or you could .zip it) before sending.

    @ p_l

o that's handy info, but even my regular files wont go thru, and even when a contact wants to send me something, it is canceled, is that also because they are behind a firewall?

If your contact is running ZoneAlarm, try lowering the firewall from high to medium.

ok thanks, but if they are not running that program (i know some people have AOL, and that creates a firewall for some users) how will they be able to recieve my files?

when i was sending a particuarly large file to one of my contacts, the sending was "timed out", what does this mean, and why does it occur?

I've heard it rumored that there's a file size limit, but I haven't been able to confirm it. Everything I've sent has been under 100 MB.

Also, sometimes it helps if you (both) disable hibernation, standby or even monitor power saving and screensavers.

unless you have a very fast connection sending 1Gb of data will be slow, and if you encounter an error the download can't be resumed with messenger.

I would create a .torrent file for uploading it, especially if you're sending it to a few different people at the same time.

You can talk about torrents all you want, so long as you have distribution rights on the material, or it's public domain
    If in doubt, Google it.

You can make a torrent, then send the torrent to them via Windows Messenger or email it to them. Then they'll need to load the torrent into a client, and you'll need to have the torrent seeding from your end.
    If in doubt, Google it.

The website is only a means of indexing many 1,000's of torrents - someone could give you the torrent files on a 3.5" floppy and the outcome would be the same.
    If in doubt, Google it.
