Hi there.
Recently it was suggested that I purchase an emachine for Video Editing (Vegas Video).
My present PC is very old and it was recommended that I don’t use it for Video Editing.
What is an emachine? Is this a build-it-yourself computer?
In another post, which got far too large lol…dcsos pointed me to this link:

Is this an emachine?
How will something like this help me with Video Editing?
Thanks so much!

Hi.
Ok, but what’s the difference between an emachine and a regular computer?

What is your budget? We can help you spec a machine.
Also, are you looking to build a computer from parts or do you prefer to buy a brand name assembled package?
Any of these machines will "run Vegas". You will need to add a large (>40GB) second hard drive and a IEEE-1394 port if one isn't includied. The faster the machine, the faster it will encode.

IMHO opinion, eMachines are an excellent brand that many overlook ASSUMING their quality isn't that great.
Mind you I have 3, a 550mhz, 667mhz and a 2.2gig machine and have never had a problem with any of them.
They are easy to upgrade with off the shelf items such as dvd burners, hard drives, blah blah blah and with over 19 years of real world expirence in the field, alot of the difference is your NOT paying a high price for the name alone.
Even Gateway, noticing the new up and coming company decided to purchace eMachines (yes eMachines are now owned by Gateway) and the original eMachine owner gave all the employees a MAJOR bonus for their hard work and dedication after the deal was done.
Sit down sometime and compare the specs of a Dell, Compaq, etc with an eMachine and I'm sure you'll notice they are very very close...well except for the price.
I run Apache webservers, telnet, SMTP/POP, ftp servers, program applications, video/audio etc on eMachines and never a problem....
Not ment as a flame war, but alot of people ASSUME they suck but they are killer boxes...do yourself a favor, get one and save a ton that can be used on other things while they pay the higher prices for the lil name tag on the computer.

E-Machine used to skimp on power supplies and motherboards but today they are at least average.

I believe I heard the same about Dell lately, skimpping on power supplies, so I am sure all the companies have had their problems.
I just hope eMach's under Gateways rule doesn't change much. I had a Gateway P133mhz with an included 3 year warrany and their service was excellent (considering I broke a keyboard atleast once a month under serious Quake I CTF fragg'n) and they (Gateway) would have me a new keyboard within a couple of days after calling and even paid for the return (I just swapped the new with the old and mailed it back to them).
But after awhile Gateway's prices went sky high...just hope the service stays the same and no price hikes.

Many store bought computers have minimal power suppiles. I noticed the cases of some Compaqs are very upgradable, but their power suppies are right on the edge.

Don't buy an e-machine, now owned and sold by Gateway! BUdget thru and thur.

Don't buy an emachine.
You get what you pay for.
For the most part....they are junk. -
Build your own...that way you know what you're getting.
When you buy an Emachine,Dell, etc the only manufacturer they tell you upfront is the CPU...everything else is a crapshoot and is usually subpar.
In most cases a custom built will be cheaper because you already have a monitor, writers, printers, etc. -
I agree on building your own but not recommended if one doesn't even know what an eMachine is.
Even using a customizable spec web site is not much use if you don't have a reasonble knowledge of GOOD computer parts/specs.
Basically- decide on a budget.
Buy the fastest CPU you can
Buy the biggest 2 hard drives you can
Buy the largest amount of ram you can (1gig is good)
Buy a high to mid range ATI or Nvidia graphic card with 128meg mem.
Buy a DVD R/W that supports + & - and dual layer dvd's.
Include a fire wire I/O somewhere in this system
It will already have USB 2.0
I would lean towards the Asus computers on that web link. The other Ecs computers are so-so. DO NOT get a Celeron! DO NOT use integrated graphics!
Asus & ECS are the motherboards in those machines and Asus is a better choice as compares to the lower end Esc boards. Customized the way you want I don't see why those listed would not be very decent for your needs. (The Asus)
