  1. What is the easiest way (if there is) to convert WMV files to Divx/Xvid so I can play them in my Phillips Stand Alone player?? Thanks all!

Either use Video Edit Magic (pay software) which will handle WMV files or TMPGEnc (free).

Don't open file with TMPGEnc but rather drag and drop the WMV file into the preview window.

Click File > Output To File > AVI
    and choose
    DivX or XviD Video Compression
    MP3 CBR audio compression

  3. Thanks I will try that. Also will divx files be much smaller than WMV? I have not really worked with wmv files much, so I dont know their relative size. Will Dr Divx work with wmv? Thanks

  4. Ok I did a conversion with Tmpg. Seemed to go smoothly. When I go to play my new divx file i get a message that says This avi file was not prepared for sequential reading, the alternative AVI splitter will now let the default one handle it. The complete reinterleaving of this file is strongly recommended before burning it onto a slow media like a cd-rom" After I close that, the file plays fine. But why am I getting this? Wrong setting during conversion? Also will this affect the ability to play on my stand alone player? Thanks!

That depends on the WMV codecs and compression. Most WMV files are compressed so much that they can't be salvaged at all.

    I've never used DR.DivX

I know I've seen that error message before but I don't remember what caused it. Maybe a conflict between the DivX and XviD codec?

I just used the default settings in TMPGEnc and the DivX 3.11 codec. When I had the DivX 5 codec and XviD installed at the same time, I had alot of problems.

I would burn it onto a cd-rw disk and see if it plays. If it doesn't, you can erase it and try again. You might try direct stream copying it through Virtualdub also and see if you get any error messages.
