Hi
Can I pick your brains?
I need to transfer NTSC VHS tapes in England
(which is PAL/I) to NTSC DVD.
The signal has to go through my Canopus ADVC 100
which is connected to my PC. The signal is then
edited in Premier Pro 1.5.
MY QUESTION;
In your opinion what is the best way to go
(I'm trying to keep the cost down)?
I have looked at multisystem VCR's but they are very
expensive, and many only seem to 'playback' NTSC
and do not OUTPUT a NTSC signal that can be captured.
I was thinking of importing a NTSC VHS VCR from the
States. Of course I would have to find one that works on
UK voltage (240v) as I understand that USA uses 110volts.
I do not want to view NTSC VHS on my TV. This is purely
to make DVD's.
I'm confused - can you help?
Many thanks in advance - Stephen

I'm in England too. Some PC cards support quasi NTSC 4.43 and some don't. I am using an early version of AVer TV which does support NTSC 4.43. Some VHS players in the UK support true NTSC 3.58, Toshiba is a well known example. The ideal platform for converting from VHS to DVD would be an S-VHS player imported from the USA. Don't be put off by the price. S-VHS in the USA is about the same price as standard VHS in the UK. There are no S-VHS players in the UK which support 3.58 out. If the tapes are copy protected you will also need a digital stabiliser of some kind. You will find outlets such as Maplin and Lektropak are reluctant to supply these. Good luck.

you can find there vhs with ntsc. it's not pure ntsc, but you can capture into pc and then convert it
or, you can import it form here, capture it and then convert it. but, then you need a 110V transformer which is not a big deal. -
You can get mulitsystem SVHS Vcr's. JVC makes a couple of models. I have one myself for playing PAL tapes in the USA. It will output the tapes in the same format as it's recored. NTSC tapes in NTSC, PAL tapes in PAL.

My point was there are no S-VHS players in the United Kingdom which output true NTSC. They all transcode the color signal to 4.43Mhz like my Panasonic. The original poster would have to import a budget S-VHS player from North America in order to extract the separate Luma and Chroma signal from an NTSC videotape. The output from a composite NTSC video player might not be usable.

Is there any reason you cannot get a pro outfit to do it for you, the effort for only one project is not worth it-believe me.
PAL/NTSC problem solver.
USED TO BE A UK Equipment owner., NOW FINISHED WITH VHS CONVERSIONS-THANKS -

I got just as much enjoyment out of learning from others as I did from the finished product - a DVD for my dad of a film he hadn't seen in 20 years.Regards,
