Recently I have been having a problem with my ATI drivers not being loaded when I start my PC.
When I start a capture program, it will tell me there is no capture device installed.
When I go to the Device Manager, one or more of my ATI drivers will have the little yellowover it.
Sometimes it's only 1 of the drivers, sometimes 2, sometimes 3 or 4.....
but it's always at least one of the following:
ATI WDM Rage Theater Audio
ATI WDM Rage Theater Video
ATI WDM TV Audio Crossbar
ATI WDM TV Tuner
I have tried everything in Device Driver to 'jump-start' the drivers including rolling back, updating, uninstalling, re-installing, etc....
Yes, I have the newest/latest drivers.
I go to ATI at least once a week to see if there are new drivers.
I am currently running the newest drivers from ATI.
Oddly enough, despite the complete lack of success thru Device Manager, I have found that when VirtualDub tells me there is no capture device, a simple reboot will solve the problem.
But, my goal here is to eliminate the problem -- a reboot won't get my show captured if it's starting NOW.
ATI tech support has no answers to this.
Oh, yeah, and YES, I have already tried to completely uninstall every single bit of ATI software on my machine and reinstall all the drivers -- twice.

What are you using to capture besides VirtualDub? It may no like that fact that you are using somthing else? Did you try the update from " Windows Update"?
-
actually, after trial & error, I have uninstalled all the other capture proggies now and only use VirtualDub - it just give me the best results.
Well, that's not necesarily true..... How the hell do you get rid of Windows MovieMaker?!?!?!?!?!
Every Friday nite I check Windows Update, update my Norton, Ad-Aware definitions, mobo chipset drivers, ATI drivers, sound card drivers, etc.....

My guess it's a hardware problem on the capturecard because I've had WMM,PowerVCR and ATI MMC installed at the same time with no problems.
I used to have a 7500 AIW and when I installed the drivers I would go in this sequence:
1.WDM
2.Video Drivers
3.Control Panel
BTW..AFAIK you can't uninstall WMM. -
I had some problems with my card on a different mobo and ATI told me the same thing:
1. Capture driver
2. display driver
3. Control panel (if you want it)
4. anything else
as far as WMM goes.....
DAMMIT!!
i want it gone! It's total crap and now it's just wasting HD space...."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

I wish I didn't have to say this, but I had the same problem you're experiencing and it got worse and worse until no number of reboots would load the necessary capture drivers. Ultimately, the only thing that worked for me was a reformat of the boot partition and a reinstall of XP.
Have you looked around on the rage3d boards (http://www.rage3d.com/board/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=24)?
All the best,

Be sure everything is removed from hard drive, registry, etc. The reinstall v6168 drivers and ATI MMC 8.7
