In the non to distant future I am looking to buy the full version of one of these and was wondering if the more experienced here could suggest one?
Are there any major differences in capabilities etc?
From the reviews I think CCE just edges it but if you lot could give me a break down of why its better (if it is?) thta would be nice
Cheers

I use Avisynth to filter, crop, resize, etc so basicly all I look for in an encoder is speed and CCE flat out PWNs in that dept. Lots of settings and templates for people to fiddle with in TMPGEnc but I don't need any of that. Quality-wise you can't really tell them apart. Nowadays it's CCE for me. When I was a bumbling noob just beginning to learn about video a few years ago TMPGEnc was absolutely great. Not trying to knock it, but TMPGEnc is like an encoder with training wheels.

Dollar for Dollar, my money goes to TMPGENC Plus
Many people mistake a program that is easy to use as being
for noobs but the quality is every bit as good as cce.
It may be a little slower but for the cost and simplicity, I take TMPGENC
Plus any day over CCE -

There are differences between the two programs, but as the exchange between Adam and myself shows in the above link, it can all be down to individual preferences.
Hope that this link is useful.Cole -
Mainconcept Mpeg Encoder is the best all around as far as being bug-free, faster than all of them, and really good quality (just as good as CCE).
Nothing is impossible for DiLeMmA says so!

Mainconcept stand-alone is too soft for my liking, although the built-in version in Vegas is very good. CCE is substantially faster than Tmpgenc, but doesn't have the built-in filters. If you are OK with using virtualdub or avisynth to filter and frameserve, then built-in filters aren't an issue. ProCoder Express also gets a good wrap, although I find ProCoder difficult to get good results out of, and very slow when you do.
You should also look at the new HC encoder, which is getting a good wrap, is quite fast (some say on par with CCE), and free. It is in early stages still, and does require Avisynth as a feeder, but is still worthy of consideration.
Having used tmpgenc and CCE, I have chosen CCE purely on the basis of speed. Temgenc's filters didn't enter into the equation because I can do all of it (and more) in virtualdub or avisynth, but I can't make tmpgenc go 2 - 3 times faster (which I find to be the difference).Read my blog here.

Cheers for the replies guys
Right, after reading the thread re: adam and gurms little knockabout lol I am left with a few questions (it would have been LOTS of questions but I managed to resist getting pulled into the black hole that would have been the 'out of ALL encoders [Mainconcept, Procoder etc], which is the best?' lol bollocks to that for a headache lol)
1) In CCE what does the TFF cropping refer to?, by that I mean does cropping replace part of the picture (the actual film not just the screen) with black bars OR does it resise the picture and then add black bars to 'fill the gap' in the no empty part of the screen left by resising?, If its the former I dont fancy losing some of the picture?
Why does CCE do this and if faced with the same original file what would Tmpgenc do? or do I have this ass about face?
2) CCE allows for Avisynth imput, now this is an area I have been dabbling with and am keen to develop my knowledge in, can anyone point me to an UNDERSTANDABLE guide for newbie types that maybe has available scripts ready to use? (I visted the avisynth site and was lost in about three mouse clicks)
3) Does CCE encode audio better than Tmpgenc? either way I suppose I can just go down the ffmepg then remux route on that perhaps?
4) Allthough I am still fighting the urge to take what seems to be thought of as the easy route with procoder I would [out of curiosity] like to know if there would be any cons going down this route in terms of quality of end encode?
Thats all I can think of right now lol, Im off to download CCE trial and test the water -

It's called "AVSEdit-Avisynth for the scripting impaired". :PPull! Bang! Darn! -
CCE's tff option is only for setting the field order, which is only applicable with interlaced footage. If you source is tff (top field first) then you leave the tff option unchecked. If it is bff (bottom field first) you check this option and CCE will crop the first scan line to change the footage to tff.
As for cropping feature, that is done using its letterbox function and this gives you the option of both of the scenarios you mentioned. You can crop picture and replace it with letterboxing or you can append letterboxing to the sides without cropping, and of course you can always resize however you like.
