    While you want to be first to patent something new, you want it to be something that is possible to do in a relatively short time frame. A patent is only valid fot 17 years (I think), so if you were to get a patent on transporters and it took you 16 years to get it working, you only have a monopoly for 1 year.

    That is true Delerious, but its 20 years from filing now. 17 years from issuance was the standard used for years but it was recently changed. Now your patent life varies depending on how long it takes the Patent Office to grant it.
