  1. Right, my media players [real and windows] for some reason are shuting down as soon as I attempt to play a couple of files (both avi) that they were playing with no problem last week

The files according to G-Spot are, first file: 4cc Xvid video with Mpeglayer3 (0x0055) audio (this file shuts down the player upon opening 'Real/windows has encountered a problem and needs to shut down'

...and the second file: 4cc DX50 video with mpeglayer3 (0x0055) audio (this doesnt shut down the media players but rather BOTH media players play the audio but the video output is comprised only of a small distorted bar across the top of the screen, essentially no picture

The only thing I can think of that is different with my system as compared to last week is the Latest Kopeis Xvid codec that I downloaded (previous to downloading this the media players WOULD play the files but Tmpgenc wouldnt, now it is the other way around)

Does this ring any bells with anyone here?

---EDIT---I have just tested some other files that according to Gspot are of the exactly the same 4cc xvid/Mpeglayer3 audio/video as the first file above and can play it with no problems???, so what is going on?

Also I have just uninstalled the xvid codec, restarted the PC with no joy---EDIT---

You could try Codec Sniper to identify and assassinate (with sound affects ) any bad codecs.
