Hi,
I just got a Pioneer DVR-109 which I plan to install in my Dell 8400, replacing the problematic Phillips 8631 which came with the machine.
Simple newbie question: do I need to "uninstall" the old unit (drivers?), via Device Manager before pulling it out and plugging in the Pioneer? Or is it as simple as a) pull out old unit and b) put in new unit, letting PNP do the rest?
I also plan to upgrade the firmware to 1.40 once I get it going. Any tips for safely doing that?
TIA!

Just remove the old burner. Make sure the jumper settings on the new drive match what is on the old drive. Put everything back to gether. Boot the machine, ther PC will see the new hardware.

Your best bet is to follow the installation instructions supplied by Pioneer.
If you dont have such instruction go to their web siteand get them.
It can be as simple as out with the old and in with new.
Windows with find the new hardware and prompt you for what action to take. -
Go here for more info on the firmware.

Thanks for the quick replies!
I had read on the Dell forum about setting the jumper to 'cable select' which, I guess, is their standard way of setting-up their machines.
The instructions provided with the Pioneer were pretty bare, and were geared towards the first-time installer, so I will go to the Pioneer site to see if they provide more beefy instructions there for the replacement situation. It makes sense to me that PNP would be able to handle it, but I'm glad you confirmed that, Bodyslide.
I've got the "official" Pioneer firmware, so I should be OK. I'll have to do more reading before I understand why I'd want any that were modified... my needs are pretty simple, so I doubt that I'd go that route.
