  1. I have windv and a panasonic pv-gs120; how do I transfer finished .avi to my camcorder? do I need an a/v card? or just the firewire?

I didn't think this part was going to be a problem, please help if you can.

    thank you so much.

WinDV goes the other direction as well. See the other tab "Recording to DV Device".

I'm assuming your "AVI" is still in DV format.

  3. cI rendered it in premiere and this produced the avi that I asked windv to transfer to my camcorder.

    \am i missing something?

    That should work.

Describe the steps you used to generate the Abobe DV-AVI file.

Assuming the project format is DV, normally you would select "Export Timeline" then "Movie" and it should export to a file in project format.

    A better way ...
Premiere will export to DV tape directly with these commands.

    Export Timeline
    Export to Tape.

This will eliminate the need for the intermediate DV-AVI file thus saving time and disk space.

  5. exported to timeline and chose movie
    it saved the .avi
I loaded the avi into windv and switched my camcorder to playback mode and pressed record in windv and it says it is recording';m nothing but black shows up in windv's preview and my camcorder screen.

i think for exporting to tape i need a/v cables hooked up from pc to cam, though, right?

    No, just a IEEE-1394 connection.
Try exporting to tape from the Premiere timeline.

When you hit "Record" in WinDV, you actually have to hit it twice before it records

  8. george, yeah, i know, thank you for the input though.

ok, tried export to timeline, export to tape, activated recording deck:

    results:

movie recorded, but was choppy and looked "fast-forwarded" in a lot of areas.

I did render the "work area", which i assume renders the entire project, but I did not export timeline immediately after rendering.

I also tried to export clip from the avi I made and it recorded nothing but a blue screen.

Maybe I should try to export timline IMMEDIATELY after rendering "work area"?

    any ideas guys?

  9. btw, every rendered area was still teal colored, meaning, I believe, that the area is already rendered.

If it were a newly added adjustment, it would be red above.

Is there a codec that I need? I am new to this, so I am very much in the dark.

p.s. the reason I keep mentioning rendering is because when I try to watch some of the scenes without previewing or rendering, they show up very gritty and jerky (hence, the "fast-forwarded" effect) that is why I am suspicious.

I worked so hard on this movie, it would be a real waste if I missed the deadline. I would appreciate any help.

The Workspace area is defined by the yellow bar at the top of the timeline. Extend it over the entire project area that you want to export.

Preview or export usually causes a render of the work area before executing preview or export. If you save your project after rendering then you won't need to do this again.

Do you have adequate free disk space for the render to work? It stores rendered areas to scratch files on the HDD as specified under Preferences - "Scratch Disks".

I never had a transfer to tape result in the problems you describe. What is your project setting? It should be DV-NTSC "Standard 48K" (720x480 29.97fps D1/DV)

    more,

Do you see any problems previewing the project (Timeline - Preview or ENTER). If the preview is OK, then it points to transfer issues.

Also, does your movie (*.avi) file play on the computer? You can import or drag it to the Bin window and preview it there.

  11. tons of free HD space,
settings as described in above post,
looks good playing it after rendered,
yellow bar does cover everything, no prob there,
    avi clip playable on pc,

maybe problem is I am running all this on a 533mhz processor? 192 ram?

    check this out:

I panicked since I had 45 min. before I had to go to work (which is where i'm at now), so I messed around w/ how everything was connected and what-not, I ended up hooking up my pc to cam to vcr all at the same time. So I opened up the avi CLIP instead of exporting the timeline. straight from pc, through the cam, to vcr.
It looked crappy as hell, but at least I was able to hand it in on time.

Is this how I was supposed to do it? I don't think it is, but it kind of worked.

Also, I noticed, in premiere, I cut one frame out and pasted like 40 or so of the "cut" frame to create a still image effect.....yeah. looks good on pc, looks like s%# on tv. It vibrates! It shakes. it sucks. Any suggestions for how to make that turn out so it doesn't shake?

    thanks!

To export to cam takes all a computer can handle. I have problems with my p3 800/512 mb of ram. I had the best luck if I rebooted my computer immediatly before exporting. You might also want to turn off as many applications as possible.

I know this is way past your deadline but I had a similar issue.
I am a newbie and using Premiere.

    1. When exporting to a camera or external box (canopus advc-100) all components must be hooked up and turned on before turnging on the computer. This did not seem to be the case when importing from these devices just exporting into them. A computer person came over to help and it worked the first time. Yeah! As we determined it is all in the sequence of hooking and turning things on.

    2. After converting the video to Microsoft DV AVI, I placed the avi file on the time line and rerendered. And played it from there. But playing it the right way.
I found out that hitting carriage return plays the video on the computer screen but does not transfer to the camera tape cleanly. By hitting play from the monitor it transferred fine to the camera or through the canopus box.

Hope this helps someone in the future. This worked but I eventually converted it to a dvd.
