  1. I do quite a lot of converting downloaded videos(usually avi) to PAL VCD.

I have always used TMPGEnc and it works fine.

However, on some files, when i encode them (or even just play them in windows media player) i get greenish 'smudges' that come and go at the bottom of the screen (kinda like as if the picture is streaking??).

Im sure its a codec issue but i cant seem to solve it.

I have the latest Xvid codec installed which seems to do the business for the majority of teh avi's i convert.

I did try ffdshow which seemed to work but then i lost audio on some files.

Can anyone give me some solid advice on which codecs i ought to have installed to cover my needs (and if i need to, how to clean up my system of codecs etc).

    Thanks in advance.

Check the files with gSpot to see which codecs are required. It will also tell you which codecs are installed on your computer that can be used to that file.

  3. Well, It looks like my problems were with Xvid not reading the avi's correctly.

I used the FourCC changer to make them DivX and they now decode fine.

    Im continuing to experiment.
