Is it any good? I've been trying for a while many different things to region-free my DVDROM / CDRW combi (Samsung 452 or something like that..... check again tomorrow ) and it's just not taking it. Firmwares, etc, no good, the counter remains and it won't unlock.

Tried "DVD Region+CSS Free" program as it claimed even the free trial could get any disc to play on any drive, with any program, regardless of locks. Naturally this hasn't worked, no matter what settings I choose.

Bit let down by it all. Is this a reputable program (seeing as it's linked to off this site, I hope so?) or did I waste my time with it?

Consider me an AnyDVD convert! Works beautifully for playing....
Now I have to see if it works for ripping.

Just to check, as i haven't done this for a while - is there an easy way with e.g. DVDRip to dump the entire contents of the disc into a particular folder? Or do you have to select particular "programs" and languages with them? I can only remember grabbing the main movie stream in English before (or chinese, for crouching tiger). My aim has changed now though - previously I was making backup VCDs (and for one-disc squashing experiments etc). Now I've got pretty nice DVDs that just have small annoying flaws in e.g. the subtitles or the soundtrack, and are also NTSC / region locked / macrovisioned / etc, which i'd like to remove. Just for "house versions", not mass distribution (hey, if i was pirating them, i'd have just downloaded them off the net rather than paying $20 plus shipping to import!).... once i've decided on which DVD writer to buy of course!

Got one where its supposed to have a literal sub, and a hearing impaired english subtitle track, but accidentally has two hearing impaired ones - but the original literal one should be available on the net somewhere (they usually are). And the other has an otherwise fine sound mix, but someone in the mixing studio goofed on the levels for the english version at a couple points, and i just need to do some careful copy-pasting from the original language. ....... on top of all the usual NTSC - PAL worries and so on! Haven't had a project like this for a while

Got plenty of spare HD space (enough for the 40Gb or so i need to store the 4 DVD9s and 3 bonus DVD5s i want to PAL-ify, with spades left over) so I can let 'em stew for a while even if i have to break off mid-conversion, but I'll have to get going with the rippage before AnyDVD's trial period runs out. Then again, I may just spend the £20 or so ($39 was it?) to register the prog.
