DrWatson32 and codecs

once again I find myself resorting to the helpul people of this community (that I am SO glad I came across all those months ago).
My problem this time is not with authoring or changing formats (Well formats may play a role) - its more of a general question regarding thumbnails and windows.

When I go to the folder containing my files (when I open it) I find my computer freezes and then I get an error from DrWatson postmortem debugger. the error itself may or may not be important, and I could paste the error log if anyone would deem it necessary in order to help me out here, but before I do that, I should add that I had this problem in the past (before I had to reformat my computer due to an unrelated matter) and I am quite sure that the problem was solved when a certain codec was installed.
problem? dont recall the codec required. I am inclined towards believing it is the xvid codec, but ... I have the 1.1beta and.. no luck... SO... anyone out there have any similar problems? maybe a suggestion?
