  1. Hi all,

I have some .avi files that I want to burn to DVD. The .avi files are widescreen format. To create the DVD files, I'm using the software that came with the burner. It's pretty simple and doesn't have many options. When I burn the disc and watch it on TV, the widescreen picture is stretched out so that it fills the entire screen. What I want, obviously, is to have the empty black spaces on the top and bottom of the picture so that it maintains it's ratio. Does anyone have any suggestions for software that I should be using?

    thanks

  2. If your avi is 25 fps - DivxtoDVD.
If not - tmpg - but it is more challenging (difficult).
Hmm, you can try also gui4ffmpeg - I don't know how it will convert an 23.976 avi.

  3. Thank you very much, Abond!

I'm curious though, why do you say that DivxtoDVD only works with video at 25 frames per second? I tried it with a video that, according to the properties, is 23 frames/second, and the results seem to be fine.

DixtoDVD will do PAL or NTSC. I believe it converts 23.976fps to 29.976 fps, instead of using pulldown flags. This might not be as smooth as if you kept it to 23.976 with pulldown by doing all manually.
