    MenuShrink Version 2.0 is here!
EDIT: MenuShrink Version 2.1 is here! See below

MenuShrink is a small application that turns large motion menus into tiny still
menus with or without audio. Menus can usually be shrunk down to 5% to 10% of
their original size, while keeping full functionality.

Version 2.0 has the following main new features:
    • New Preview mode allows you to visually select which image to use in each menu.
    • The output DVD are more compliant than before. The remaining problems with highlights not showing on some DVD players have been fixed.
    • Cells with "non-functional" buttons are now skipped.
    • There's an new panel to set the path to your favorite apps.
along with many improvements and bug fixes.
Get the new version at the usual place:
    http://jean.laroche.free.fr/MenuShrink/

    Here's the change log.

    UI:
    • Added selection with video preview for the still frame.
    • MenuShrink remembers which frames were manually selected for the last processed DVD.
    • MenuShrink can reload the last opened DVD.
    • Added tool buttons and a path panel to set them up.
    • Added support for messages in french.
    • Added better command-line support. Pass video_ts.ifo and you open the full DVD. Pass vts_01_0.vob and only that VTS is marked for processing.
    • If the VTSM_C_ADT table isn't correct to begin with, MenuShrink no longer crash.
    • The VTS selection panel has been improved.
    Engine:
    • MenuShrink now produces more compliant single-VOBU cells in no-audio mode.
    • In audio mode, the audio is no longer clipped when the buttons appear late in the menu.
    • MenuShrink now picks the smallest frame for transition clips (menu intros/outros).
    • MenuShrink now squashes and attempts to skip cells that have non-functional buttons (either tiny buttons, or buttons that all have NOP commands).
    Bug Fixes:
    • Fixed a bug in the pack identification routine that caused an audio pack to be mistaken for a navpack in Godzilla!!!
    • Fixed a problems with tools when the path to the DVD folder had spaces in it.
    • Occasional highlight delay has been fixed.
    • The few remaining problems with highlights not showing on some DVD and some players have been ironed out.

Here's the thread for version 1.0.

    Enjoy!

  2. I just downloaded it, read the manual and can't wait to try it. Q: after shrinking down menus, can you send it directly to DVD-RB, and if so - how? If you cannot, then what must you do first? Thanks.

If DVD-RB can open a DVD using command-line arguments then yes you can. All you need to do is define one of the tool buttons to open DVD-RB. Click on the Set paths button, and set the path for tool1 (for example) to point to DVD-RB. This will enable the corresponding button on the main MenuShrink panel. When you click on it, it should open the output DVD (processed by MenuShrink) with DVD-RB.
Let me know if this works. I don't know at this point, if DVD-RB opens a DVD passed as a command-line argument... Most apps do, but not all!

  4. I set the path, it did open DVD-RB, but it did not load the MenuShrink (shrunken menu) file like it does in DVD Shrink. How would you recommend to proceed? Maybe save it to hard drive folder using DVD Shrink with no compression, then using that folder w/ DVD-RB, or is there a better way?

By the way, it shrunk down 300MB to just 2MB on both Sopranos season 1 discs 1 & 2.

HatchetMan, after my post nwg told me that DVD-RB does not open files from the command line so the DVD won't automatically be opened. But you can still open it manually!!!! In DVD-RB, open the DVD in the original location (NOT the backup files!), and you'll be good to go. No need to use shrink or anything...
The fact that DVD-RB does not open it automatically does not mean it can't open it at all... It simply means you have to open it manually (Open menu etc)...

    MenuShrink Version 2.1 is here!

Version 2.1 has the following main new features:
    • The VTSM_C_ADT table is now fixed if it was incorrect to begin with. DVD Shrink should no longer complain in such (rare) cases.
    • The LOG is now in color. This will make it much easier to see warnings and errors. Thanks jsoto!!
    • MenuShrink is more clever than before when it comes to skipping "useless" menus.
along with a couple bug fixes.
Get the new version at the usual place:

Make sure to refresh the download page to get version 2.1!

    Here's the change log.

    UI:
    • The LOG now has color, which makes it much easier to see warnings and errors. Thanks jsoto!
    • Cells that were not referenced in the original DVD are now flagged in the log.
    Engine:
    • MenuShrink now fixes the VTSM_C_ADT when it's not correct to begin with. This fixes problems related to DVD Shrink complaining when opening menu-shrunk DVDs with incorrect VTSM_C_ADT tables.
    • In those rare cases where the button definition changes in the middle of a cell, MenuShrink now uses the last buttong definition, which is more likely to be the right one.
    • MenuShrink now updates some of the navpack's VOBU_SRI pointers, which fixes a problem one user encountered on his DVD recorder.
    • If all the commands in a menu are NOPs or LinkNextProgram, MenuShrink will "kill" the cell (the menu is essentially a useless "intro"). This makes for better menu navigation.
    Bug Fixes:
    • Fixed a bug in the save log routine that sometimes caused garbled output.
    • Fixed a bug that prevented restoring some backup files in some weird cases.
    • Fixed a bug that caused menus to not show when animated highlights were present (very rare). This was the case for example for Spiderman 1. MenuShrink now only keeps the first subpic unit it finds in the menu.

    Enjoy!
