.vob, .ifo, .bup files?

Sorry, I'm completely new to burning dvd so bear with me. My main goals are to burn avi's from my digital camera to dvd preferablly with menu's for each individual clips. Also, at some point, I plan on doing dv to dvd conversion as well. Thus far, all tools I've downloaded are freewares. I converted my avi's yest with DivxToDVD (i did all 21 avi's individually). After each conversion there would be a folder with titled "VIDEO_TS" and in each would be files with .VOB, .IFO, .BUP. I'm computer illiterate and after reading the glossary, I still don't understand what theses files are exactly. I've also read that DVD Shrink can string .VOB files together. Does that mean .IFO,.BUP files are extraneous. What I planned on doing is maybe "authoring" with DVDAuthorGUI and burning with DVD Decrypter. Does like sound like a good start or does somebody have better suggestions for tools that may be easier. Thanks.
