Hi, I don't know if this is a dumb question or not but here goes....

I have a vhs tape that was recorded in PAL format. I live in Canada and wanted to capture the tape on the computer and then burn it on DVD in NTSC format so I can watch it. I tried using InterVideo WinDVD and Sony Vegas with no luck. Is there a setting that says the input is PAL format or do I need a VHS player that plays PAL to be able to capture this?

    Thanks

  2. You need a VHS player that will play the PAL tape.
As long as the player is outputting something the capture hardware and software can read, you'll get it. Very few Canadian VHS machines can do anything with a PAL tape.

  3. If this is a one off project(oxymoron?), and you do not have a vcr which will play pal, get a local service to do it for you.

If you do have a pal vcr, see if your dvd player will play pal dvd's and if so, just make a pal dvd. if all you are doing is playing it on your pc, pal/ntsc doesn't matter.

The cheapest software that will encode from pal to ntsc is either cyberlink power producer or Canopus procoder express. I think Tmpg encode is also a free download and that will do it, but you need authoring software.

    Hope this helps
