Well, I will download a movie which is already a SVCD. Then, I want to add a subtitle on it, to later burn on a CD. I know how to do when the movie is a XviD or DivX and it will be converted to (S)VCD; I searched the this site and all I found was that "adding subtitle in Xvid to (S)VCD"

    So, anyone can help?

    Three steps
    1. Use Subtitle workshop to synchronize the subtitle and to convert them to ssa format.
    2. Use Maestro SBT to make submux compatible bitmaps.
    3. Use WinSubMux to multiplex the bitmaps (.sub file) with the mpg.
    Author and burn as usual.

Well, the others versions of that movie are all "TS", the only TC version I found was that SVCD one.

Thanks for helping, I will try your method

This method works with the selectable subtitle feature of SVCD right? Well, my DVD Player plays SVCD but don't read its subtitles.

    Is there any other method??

    Permanent subs:
Load the mpg in VirtualDubMod, add your subtitles with apropriate subtitle filter (you may have to convert your subs), frameserve to your fav SVCD mpeg encoder.

    yes, this method works.

But I will have to re-encode the already encoded SVCD movie? It will not lead to loss of quality?

  7. Beofre to give up try to multiplex the subs in WinSubMux as CVD, if you have done it as SVCD. This will not change anything in the video or subs appearance, but seems to be better compatible with most players. If it doesn't work you are out of luck. Don't know another way, only to make permanent subs, but that means reencoding the video - well I consider it not good.

Even as CVD. In this site, my DVD Player is characterized as not having SVCDSubs (see link)

So the only way is reenconding. If I re-encond a 1600Kbps movie, for example, as 1600Kbps too, the quality loss will be too much?

It all depends on the content (high action, how much original is compressed...) Make a short (a minute or 2) reencode (without adding subs) and take a look.

  10. The last to try, before you decide to ruin the video in reencoding it, is to author the SVCD files as DVD with subtitles - I see the player support DVD-SVCD and also miniDVD/cDVD. So in this case the subtitles would be DVD type (no SVCD, no CVD) and there is good chance the player will play them.

What's the format of the subs? .srt is the most widely supported subtitle format, and both DVDAuthorGUI and DVD-Lab Pro imports .srt subs, and at least DVD-Lab Pro accepts SVCD mpeg as source mtrl for DVD. If the subs are in any text based format, it's simple to convert to .srt with SubtitleStudio.

Oh, thanks. The subs are in ssa, I have some programs here to do the job, including Subtitle Studio

Which program you recommend? DVDAuthorGUI or DVD-Lab Pro?

  14. Well, you need authoring software - like DVDLab or Guifordvdauthor or ReJig or IfoEdit - which support authoring with subtitles. Now you don't have dvd burner - it gonna be tricky. Firstly try with short part of the file, simply to see if your player will play the subs. I would suggest DVDLab. Now the problem is that SVCD file structure allow 800 mb on 80 min (700 mb) CD, but DVD file structure allow only 700 mb - so you must somehow compress the file or use more CDs. Well, first try to see that player can play the subtitles from miniDVD (that is dvd files on CD).

I tried DVDLab and I could add SVCD with no problems, but I couldn't add subtitles:
