  1. Point ... Companies dont have egos, they have balance sheets .. Its not about NOT paying royalties to Sony/Phillips, its about not earning those same royalties for themselves.. (the most money is earned from the sale of certified blank media ... see cassettes /CDr's).. this is why SOny likes to make its own standards ... imagine how much Sony would charge for special "sony" electricity to power its products, if it could get away with it..... ( add atrac, magicGate and UMD to list) ...

Also this is the "reason" for FVD, now, and SVCD back then ... History repeats itself .. first as tragedy, then comedy.
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

Oh yeah? Then why did Acura just stop manufacturing the NSX in 2005, when the car hasn't made money since day one? Simple. Acura honchos thought they could manufacture a car that would take market share away from Porsche by manufacturing a superior sports car. They were wrong on both counts, yet continued to manufacture the car for the last 15 years. Ego.

" .. Its not about NOT paying royalties to Sony/Phillips, its about not earning those same royalties for themselves.. "

Since Sony/Phillips had the original license, the only way not to pay the licensing fee was to manufacture a "new" format. They did not collect license fees on the +R format.

    Already stated previously.....
