I want to reduce the size of some of the DivX videos on my PC so that I can fit more on a single DVD. I tried using virtualDub and the output is great quality but VirtualDub keeps crashing on me at the very end so the videos dosent finish encoding. I have given up sorting the problem with VirtualDub and would like to know are there any other good and easy vodeo encoders out there that I can use??

I may be wrong here (hey Im new lol) but never fear there will be an expert around to correct me if I am, but as far as I know if you author the files to VTS/VOB ready to burn etc could you not then take the VTS/VOB files and run them through DVD Rebuilder?

I think it works in conjunction with a couple of encoders CCE etc so you should achieve good results?

Have a read of the reviews of DVD Rebuilder in its section in tools

If I have got this balls about face then I am sorry lol

    Anyone?

  3. Dont give up on virtualdub quite yet. Virtualdub itself will not crash like that, its usually caused by the codec in use, could be both source and target codec, my vote is the source codec.
Most likely your source video has some bad frames at the point where the crash occurs. If the source is Xvid you can solve the problem with an older Xvid version. Possible the same can be the done also with DivX, older or newer codec version.

Anyway, converting a video with bad frames is usually wasted time, can cause audio desyncs that are hard to fix.

You cannot use DVDRebuilder for avi files.

That needs to be used from VOB files.

You need to convert avi to DVD or D-SVCD to save on space.

You can use TMPGenc, nerovision express, winavi, DVD2SVCD etc for this.

There are plenty of guides for this.

I take it you want to store AVI on DVD media, right, not creating Video DVD? If so, I agree with thor300 - VirtualDub (like most other AVI encoders) is just a "shell" for what you're doing. All work is done in the codecs. Your source file(s) is probably damaged in some way. This is very common for AVIs downloaded using P2P software. (I'm not saying that yours are, but as a general observation.)
Get some other version of codecs, scan the source AVI for errors, find better AVIs are some of the things you should try.

They are 350mb avi files that I got from my friend. He ripped it from his dvd's. I have been keeping in on my HD but now I am running out of space and I want to make it to 170mb avi's. I tried using virtualDub but it keeps crashing at about 70% or 80% with 10 minutes left, nomatter what codec I use either DivX or XVID. I keep getting:

Dub: I/O thread has not cycleed for thirty seconds - possible livelock. [Thread action: waiting for audio data from I/O thread][Current address:7C90EB94]
Dub: I/O thread has not cycleed for thirty seconds - possible livelock. [Thread action: reading/processing audio data][Current address:7C90EB94]

Do you all still think this is caused by the codecs I am using??

Any suggestions cause I really like the output from virtualDub?

Dont think it could be bad frames as it locks at different places and as I understand bad frames makes it lock at a single place. Downloading different codecs and trying out now.

  12. HALF filesize? Too much quality loss if we assume the video is like 45 minutes. Even at 350MB that is barely acceptable quality.
