  1. I unfortunately waited too long with one of my DVDs and after accidentally dropping it, there is now a gash that has made it unreadable with DVDShrink or CloneDVD, they error out after getting 90% of the way through their initial scan

DVD Decrypter was able to read everything on it except the last .VOB but unfortunately that is not enough for any DVD5 shrinker I can find - they all try to reference the material that is not there and crash or error out.

Is there any program I can use to force it to shrink what I have already regardless of missing material/errors? I need to backup before it gets any worse

    Thanks for any help!

the first thing i would do is use womble mpeg video wizard and extract as much of the video/audio as i could to an mpeg file.. then i would use a disc cleaner and try fixing the disc (disc doctor, etc).. then try extracting the video again, maybe you'll do better than you did the first time, maybe worse.

  3. I've been studying vobblanker with the idea that maybe I can somehow tell it to just remove the missing .VOB from the chain? The problem is that tool is rather over my head. If this is a valid idea, could someone give me some simple steps in how to tell it to remove the missing .vob from the dvd index?

  5. Sorry if I am not being completely clear, I have used DVDDecrypter to successfully copy the entire DVD to the hard drive EXCEPT one of the last VOB's in the main movie.

By the time you get done with all this, you will have spent as much time as the original was worth. Get a new one and call it even. This has happened to me more than once. Unless you can clean that scratch out with one of those cleaning rigs, you may never be able to read past that scratch. The industry needs to come up with a compound that could be applied evenly to fill scratches. It would have to have the same refractive index as the polycarbonate substrate and then have a way to level it out perfectly. It was a thought any way.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

After viewing so many posts regarding the use of clear sprays after printing on a dvd, Jtoolman with his comments regarding the need for a compound to fill in the scratches in a dvd gave me the idea that these same clear sprays might be used to spray the underside of problem DVD's . I have some problem disks so I think I will give it a try. Has anybody else tried this?

Be sure you do it in a 100% dust free room. Not sure where to find one.

  9. The clear spray may not work. I got some over spray on the bottom of one of my dvds and it only played until it got to the spray spot. I tried cleaning it off but made it worse. Had to make a new backup

You could do this: rip just the VOBs to a folder on your HD. Open IFOEdit and click "Create IFOs", when the window comes up click on the first VOB. Wait 'til the progress window disappears. This will make a playable DVD for you out of what you could recover, no menus, no nothing. Consult an IFOEdit guide over there <--- if you want to set new chapter points or set which audio track will play automatically.

    Good luck.

Hey, before throwing in the towel, try some plain white toothpaste on the scratch. Smear it in there really good, let it dry, then buff it off with a t-shirt. See if that helps. If not, the disc is FUBAR - just get a new one. DVD's are relatively cheap.

FRITZI93 is right. Rip the vob's with dvddecrpter, with the setting "ignore read errors" checked, 0 reties. then process the resulting fragmented vob sets with ifoedit. If you still want menus, use a dvd authoring program such as tmpeg dvd author to make them.

Is "FUBAR" still used. Do people still actually said "FUBAR". The last time I remember hearing it was in Saving Private Ryan. Not criticizing just curious.

Yeah, it's still used. But then again I'm a bit anachronistic, especially for a guy in his late 20's (ok, kissing 30).

My personal favorite exclamation is SWEET FANCY MOSES!

  15. The expression "SNAFU" must have been more common. (Situation Normal....All Fouled/Fooked Up) I remember it was still used occasionally in the sixties, then it pretty much died. Don't think I ever heard "FUBAR" until Saving Private Ryan.

My dad was in the Navy during WW2 and knew immediatly what each stood for and repeated them. First time I ever heard him say the F word. He said the only thing about using them in the navy is that sailors prefered to just say the whole phrase rather than use a nice acronym.
