Hi, I was just wondering if it is typical to come across store bought dvds with errors on them, none that effect the way they play but how they backup. I'm not talking about the new sony protection. I was backing up my movies this weekend and came across 2 movies that no matter what software I used I could not back them up, they were Flight of the Navigator (Disney) and The Legend of Bagger Vance. I used Nero to scan them and both show numerous errors on the source. The backup just freezes when it gets to that point. All the other movies, I had no problem with, I usually use Decrypter/Shrink but I also tried the trial versions of Anydvd/Clonedvd, atleast clonedvd indicated it came across the error.
Just curious if this happens time to time?

Could happen I guess, but in five years I've never had one. I don't have those two movies so who knows?

I've never had one myself, but it DOES happen.
Try ripping with a different drive though - it could just be that your current ripping drive is aging, or displaying an extreme intolerance of irregularities in the disc(s). -
It's from the movie "The Crow"
I've had the bad luck to get a few. The X-Files movie - my standalone (Pioneer) would not load it. A friend's much newer Pioneer would not load it. Took it back to the store and they put it in their machine where it eventually timed out. Replaced witha copy that worked flawlessly.
Hammer House of Horror boxset - one disk had a visible flaw in the disk surface. Again, replaced without issue.
There was one other (can't remember the title) that would load the menu, but refuse to play the movie.
If you have disks with the new structure protection (and navigator might be one of these - it's name popped up recently as an issue) then the latest versions of DVD Decrypter and AnyDVD will work. In cases where people have claimed they don't it has always transpired that they were not using the latest version, regardless of their claims to the contrary.Read my blog here.

I too have run into this problem..I was trying to back up my 1 season of the Waltons..and on one of the dvd's decrypter and xcopy hangs up on the 99 percent mark..scaned the disk and it has several errors..maybe I should take it back and exchange the dvd's for another set?

Scustalow: Try the VERY LATEST DVD Decrypter - 3.5.4.0 - and see if it can read the disc. If not, then yeah take it back... unless your drive is old.

I purchased Pearl Harbor director's cut brand new when it came out. One disc had glue on it from the packaging, so it wouldn't play very well until I cleaned it off. Another disc had some sort of a dimple, would not play or rip past that point. So, yeah, errors are possible. But, my other copy was fine. As is my own copy of the one you mention - Flight of the Navigator. If you like that one, be sure to pick up Explorers.

I had trouble backing up my Don Knotts Reluctant Hero Pack dvd because of disc errors. So yes it's possible. The original disc has spots where the movie freezes or jumps. I tried DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter with my Nec drive and got errors. Then I tried DVD Shrink and my Sony drive and it copied OK. The copy works good.
