  1. I recently formated my hard drive and installed windows xp pro ,sp1 and a few essential programs and my cpu usage in task managaer starts spiking up anywhere from 50 to 100% even if I'm not even doing anything or have any programs open. I don't see anything in the processes tab that's causing this and I've run virus and spyware programs to no avail. It's a new install anyway. Does anyone have any idea what's going on? All I installed initially were these programs and all hell broke loose.

In the processes list you can see each process along with the CPU utilization. You can select additional columns to view through the menu (View--> Select Columns). Add the "CPU time" counter as well.

You can then sort the processes by CPU or CPU Time for easier identification of any process getting this 50% of your CPU. Sorting by CPU Time - by clicking on the appropriate header on the list - will make it even easier to identify which process is collecting CPU time.

It will most likely be none of the applications you mention that you installed.

It could be the antivirus program you are using. If fresh installed it may be background scanning your disks for viruses.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

Gigabyte recommends the Intel INF drivers for your mobo. The above URL should link to them.

You might have interrupt conflicts - go into your bios and turn off the ports and devices you never use - Com1, Com2, LPT1 (if you don't use them)- audio, lan, whateva...

Run Msinfo32 from the "start--->run" button and you'll get a list of conflicting devices.

    And there's always Sp1...
