  1. I'm sure this question gets asked about once a week around here but here's my try at it. I am looking to buy a video capture card. And eventually a Video camera to go along with it. What I will be doing is taking home movies and burning them as vcds to be played on a stand alone dvd player.

Now my question is whats the best buy for a capture card for around 300$ or less... Also any tips or suggestion on a video camera are also welcome (pretty open on a price range for this).

  2. I'll leave the capture card part of your question alone, as all I have is a WinTV PCI card. Others with dedicated capture cards + the capture card section of this site are a better source of info.

On the video camera part, I can offer a tip: go digital, avoid analog. Period. Get yourself something that uses the MiniDV format at the least. My JVC DVL21U is a great little piece of hardware, while not new it does a very good job of recording. Tranferring the video over to the PC via firewire, I then use TMPGEnc to encode MPEG-1/2 files.
