Sounds to me like you don't have local administrator rights.
    If in doubt, Google it.

thanks Jim, but i do log in as an Administrator.

anyway,I got this from Microsoft website:
    Q. Can I connect a new PC running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 to a work network or domain?

    A. While you can access network resources on a work network or a domain, you cannot join a Windows XP Media Center 2005 PC to the domain. PCs running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 are designed specifically for home use. Professional features, specifically Domain Join and Cached Credentials (Credentials Manager for logins) are not included. As a result, you will be prompted for your login username/password to access network resources after a reboot or logging back into the PC. In addition, file shares or network resources set to require a domain-joined PC for access will not be available. Remote Desktop and Encrypting File System support are still included.

Is this the reason Network ID button in XP MCE 2005 are grayed out?

Anyone here using XP MCE..could validate please....thanks.

Only XP Pro can connect to a domain. I have a local school as a client. They have 500+ students with laptops. You can lease through the school, or buy your own. XP Pro or Win2K are specified as the only acceptable OS's, however every year we get irate parents who bought a cheapo deal with XP Home on it, and wonder why they have to shell out again for Pro.

Actually (and I can say from experience) you CAN join a domain with MCE 2005 as I'm already on one. The problem is you have to do it during the initial Window$ setup, not once you've completely installed it. Unfortunately if your NIC isn't supported out of the box, you're out of luck. My onboard Intel PRO 1000MT isn't, so I put one of my PRO 100 cards in as well so that I could join a domain during setup. Once the OS is up and running and you have drivers for your other card you can pull the second card out and continue on the domain as normal.
Nothing can stop me now, 'cause I don't care anymore.
