  1. I hope that this is the right forum for this.

I have a couple of .avi files that for some reason have lost the audio. I have doen some very basic comparing of these couple of files to a couple that work fine - audio is great.

Anyway, the .avi files that work fine indicate that audio is PCM and video compression is MS-YUV. The one's with no audio (and they were recorded with audio working properly) indicate that the audio is PCM but the video compression is "uncompressed".

Since the files that I would like to "fix" show that the audio is uncompressed vs the MS-YUV compression of the ones that work fine, is there a way to fix the files with no audio or are they history?

BTW, the files in question are on my hard drive and not on a disk - if that makes any difference.

I would really like to get these files back in working order again (my daughter and grand-daughter) so any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Vance

    Search Comp PM
Download gspot and use it to open the files. Post screenshots of the output here. This will clear up any confusion from your descriptions. PCM is uncompressed audio. MS-YUV is a video compression. Gspot will make sure we are all on the same page.

  3. Other than Gspot, you could get virtualdub, and open the avi. Click File, file information, and see if there IS an audio track. If so, then it's easy to work with. If not, then you simply have no audio in the movie.

  4. Okay, I used VirtualDub as reboot suggested and it does show that there is audio.
I take this to mean that there is audio, correct?

If so, how can I fix the mess I've made?

    Thanks,

  5. Open again in virtualdub, select Audio, Full processing.
    Click File, Save .WAV
You now have an audio track you can work with.

  6. Thanks Reboot. I did exactly as you suggested and saved as a .wav however, there is still nothing there. I even tried playing it thru goldwave and there just isn't anything there. I tired this with a couple of the files and nothing seems to be working. Should I just scrap this file? Or do you have another suggestion or two?

    Thanks again,
    Vance

  7. If that didn't work, then the audio track is silent. Scrap and start again.
