  1. a friend just purchased a dvd burner for his tv and we wanted to record off the satellite to dvd for some shows. it has a 2, 4, and 6hr speed. i record onto vhs on ep all the time and even though its suppose to be lowest quality it always turns out fine. if i record onto the ep speed on the dvd burner will the quality be as good as if i recorded onto new vhs ep speed.. just wondering if anyone knows..

    thank you

Quality is in the eye of the beholder, and different makes perform better at longer time settings. You'll just have to try it and see. Personally I don't like to go above 2 hours, but then I haven't tried a JVC.

  3. I agree. I got the ILO, applied the hacks, which got me the 3 hr. mode, and I wouldn't go further than 2 hr mode, unless I don't care all that much about the quality. Oh, and I, too, have a satellite system, that I am recording off of.

  4. 2 hours here too, never gone over on any I've owned. Discs are far too cheap to sacrifice all that quality.

  5. I've transferred a lot of movies from my DishNetwork DVR to DVD in the 4 hr mode and they look fine. I've also given a lot to my brother and he says they're fine as well. You could get an RW disk and experiment with different speeds to see which looks best to you....

  7. Any time! I've found that anything past about 4 1/2 hours or so tends to lose quality fairly rapidly, but up to that looks fine....

You can generally go up to 3-4 hours, depending on the quality of the recorder. Some recorders look bad past 2 hours, inferior chips.

The specs of 4-hour are essentially the same as 2-hour (half res, half bitrate).

    The 1-hour 3-hour is a superbit-like bitrates (3-hour res/bitrate at half of 1-hour).

Beyond four hours, you deinterlace your video, which looks like crap.
