Ok, I tried a search on this, but nothing came up. I know a lot of you aren't in the US, so you probably have this answer.

If I rip a dvd from a different region without watching it, does this change my counter? You know, does just unlocking it do this? I've not been able to get the firmware change to work on my computer dvd, and I'll wait til it locks before I'll try removing the reg key : ) Then I'll just reformat and start all over (won't be the first time).

And here's my other question: is there such a thing as a region free dvd-rom?

Liz (I think I'm turning Japanese)

    Oh yes.

Most DVD-rom's built before 2000 are RPC 1. They have no region protection. THe protection is in the software and things like "Dvd Genie" will alter this.

RPC 2 drives were made after 2000 and can sometimes be flashed to RPC 1 firmware.

  3. In answer to your question the answer is yes aslong as U dont start the dvd playing it will work fine. There is a possiblity that the dvd wont go across to the drive if its rpc2 so if you can track down an old copy of dvddecryptor 2.4 or below this should take it across no bother!! I own a cheapo lg 16x40 dvd. there are flash programs about to force it to rpc1 as stated in the previous message also progs to check the region info. But as stated in the rules I cant give u a link to the website so U will have to hunt or beg an admin.

ripped the us version of legally blonde using dvdx and it was mint.. plays nicely on my eclipse 695 dvd player and on my cyberhome one to so U have ya answer just go searching for ya patch & utils now.

Once it locks, you need a vendor key to unlock it.

Formatting won't help as the region isn't stored in the Hard drive but in the actual unit itself.

Once u use up ur changes, u have to either flash the rom, remain with what u have or buy a new DVD-ROM.
