  1. Specifically for the PSP screen, its dimensions are something like 320x206

What program can I change the canvas size (Illustrator talk) or "add black bars to the top and bottom" of the video with? It would be very helpful to keep the ratio size of the video to the screen. Keeping in mind the videos Im talking about are .avi, .mov, .mpeg, etc etc

    Thanks

Virtualdub resize filter has an option to add broders in any direction of any size. Virtualdubmod will handle most formats, except maybe quicktime (mov) files. It's free and easy.

    Its called letterboxing...

I agree with guns1inger, but suggest getting the SmartResize filter for VirtualDub / VirtualDubMod:

  4. One guy today told me that Adobe made a good program. Premiere or something?

If Im gonna get a program, Id like it to have a lot of features for whatever I may need to do to a movie at that time.

Is Adobes program any better than VirutalDub? Does one do something that the other doesnt?

    Thanks

Premiere I would say is overkill. Best thing for the job would be AVISynth. Chances are that your source video uses YV12 as will your output for the PSP.

From what I gather though some of the apps designed for encoding PSP videos uses ffmpeg for encoding, which does not accept AVISynth scripts as input. So it would not be possible to frameserve. Doubt it would be possible with Premiere or VDub either though.

ffmpeg itself also should be capable of resizing/padding.

ropdoh - thanks fopr pointing out smartresize. I hadn't looked at it because the built in filter seemed pretty good. This makes it even better.

Premiere is way overkill and probably completely inappropriate for format conversions. It is an editor, first and foremost, and can be picky about what it will and will not work with, and how it will work with it. Avisynth is powerful and fast, however it does not have an interface, so everything is scripted. If you don't code, and want something to start with now, virtualdub is the better option.

  7. Last question..

Will one of these programs allow me to both add and subtract the black bars from various file formats?

Id speak in better technical terms, but its late, Im tired, and its just easier to understand idiot talk 8)
