    Hi,

Setting up a proxy server normally requires a dedicated computer, I personally prefer a NAT server (Network address translation) which it is a both a firewall and a router. The use of a proxy is currently to achieve goals such as:

    1) Provide Internet connectivity to several hosts when there is only one internet connection.
    2) Anonymous web page surfing.
    3) Bandwidth use monitoring per user.
    4) Acceleration of web pages loading.
    5) Access Control.

You would need a Linux box with a properly configured package called Squid and all the security measures available or a Windows box with the Proxy server, but this last option is not free.

You may find good information here about Linux here:

If you want EVERYTHING to go through the proxy, you'll have to go through a SOCKS 5 proxy server. There are commercial subscription Socks proxy servers you can go through, or less reliable public ones, which get shut down fairly frequently.

You have to load an app on your workstation to act as the middleware between your app(s) and the socks proxy.

BTW, you don't have to do this if you just want Http and FTP proxying. You can use a standard proxy server (non socks) to do this.

Games would go through a Socks5 server typically, but here's an app that allows you to go through either. Your proxy server is going to have to be a fast one, located elsewhere, optimally in another country if you want to mask your IP address.

Yeah, that might equate in to one hell of a ping depending on who you choose... might not be worth it if it brings you down to a 56k'ers level.
