  1. A friend of mine has had some of their family's old 8mm home movies professionally converted into DVDs. Now they are wondering if they could add some add an audio commentary to some of the dvds. They do not want to spend any more money to have this done professionally.

I follow the forums on this site fairly religiously, but up to this point I've only been interested in doing DVD backups, so I don't have much know much about this aspect of dvd manipulation. Would any of the free or inexpensive DVD authoring software be able to add audio commentary to an already authored dvd?

I'm thinking I could use ffmpegGUI to convert the wav to AC3 and use IfoEdit to multiplex the audio and video. I've read that Ifoedit is not the easiest software to use, so if there is anything else out there for less than 50 dollars that would do this I would consider it.

If the DVD's contain no audio I'd use TMPGenc DVD Author. Just record the commentary (mic into line in etc..), convert the WAV file to ac3 (Besweet), import the DVD into TDA, insert the audio, make the menu, burn it, all done! If it already has audio then i've not a clue

Using BeSweet to convert your WAV files to AC-3 is a good idea but I've got to say that I've read that some DVD players are not compatible with AC-3 files encoded with BeSweet.
You can record your soundtrack on tape and later transfer the data to your PC as a WAV file. First problem: lack of sync. How to sync your soundtrack and the action on screen? You'll need an application such as Vegas or Premiere to let you do that....Then you'll need another application to burn your DVD such as the one suggested above...Believe me my friend...it's a hell of a job, but if you had the guts...which of course is not the case here, sinve you've mentioned - no more money. In this case, that'd be much better to get it done professionally - prices are not that staggering nowadays.
