Decarie Expressway
Those who have ever driven through Montreal, Quebec, Canada will know what I mean lol. AT no point of the day will you ever spend less than 60 minues in traffic on that "expressway." :P -
Heavy handed (I mean a hand can only weigh so much right???

Otherwise known as the Distressway, as of and evening all the traffic coming vaguely north, northeast/west, or indeed east/west in some cases gets funnelled up this four-mile, four lane* stretch of highway and out to other places - such as the near-permanenly congested junction 5 to junction 11 section of the M6 Motorway, the A38 trunk road, and local roads through Erdington and the like to nearby commuter towns.
(and of course, it collects commuters from the same places of a morning)
Hence usually it's quite badly nose-to-tail hardly moving at peak times.
Off-peak, the 50mph speed limit is an absolute joke.... during rush hour it also is, because the whole thing deserves a 20mph limit just to redistribute the congestion!
Smarter customers nip down the Lichfield road instead (what used to be the main route, replaced by the expressway about 25 years ago) as it is now mostly fogotten by the bulk of zombie commuters and is quite free flowing, if not particularly quick, and rejoin the city-centre bypass (there's another oxymoron! except the tunnels etc that the "Queensway" entail usually aren't so bad) that the expressway becomes just after the bottleneck causing the slowest traffic.
(and again, in the opposite direction, you leave just before the bottleneck and rejoin the road after the expressway ends)
*it's quite a clever thing - there are 7 lanes of surfaced, mostly elevated road, but no divider, just the central lane has a different colour of tarmac. illuminated, "matrix" sign boards (very low rez LED type displays - about 16x16 in red/yellow/green) tell you which lanes you can or cannot use, when to merge back in, etc.... in the peak flow direction, there are 4 lanes, the other way there are 2, and there's always 1 lane separation. off peak, it's 3x3 instead. In theory, it's a perfect and efficient use of space. In practice it really doesn't help things, as the bulk of the traffic is filtered down into 2 lanes at the exit anyway!
Ahem. Yes.-= She sez there's ants in the carpet, dirty little monsters! =-
Back after a long time away, mainly because I now need to start making up vidcapped DVDRs for work and I haven't a clue where to start any more!
